mackkie Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I don't fly fish, but enjoy catching trout in New England's rivers, and lakes. I typically catch trout on inline spinners like panther martins or rooster tails, and blue fox minnow spins. I've also had a bit of luck with plain old silver spoons. My trout fishing knowledge is very limited though, and I really enjoy catching these beauties! Look forward to hearing what you guys look for, and what spinnings lures/baits you use, thanks. Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 1, 2009 Super User Posted January 1, 2009 In addition to the spinners and spoons, crankbaits, such as Floating Rapalas, and other lures, like a grub on a jighead, will work. For the larger trout that I cast for from Lake Ontario piers, lipless cranks are my favorite. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 1, 2009 Super User Posted January 1, 2009 Panther Martin, gold blade, black with chartreuse dots; Floating Rapala, Countdown and X-rap. 8-) Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 For New England trout, I highly recommend Lucky Craft suspending jerkbaits, size 65 (especially Ghost Minnow, American Shad, & Chartreuse Shad). They are my go-to lure for wintertime trout fishing (I don't really target trout when there isn't ice on the lakes). My other favorite, in addition to inline spinners, is a 1/8 oz jighead with a 3" Power Minnow (black back, silver/white sides). This is a great lure for catching winter trout that are lazing around in the bottoms of deep pools. Quote
mackkie Posted January 3, 2009 Author Posted January 3, 2009 Thanks guys. tony, what color combo for inline's have you found to be a success if you don't mind me asking? Quote
sambrochill Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I've had some luck on the Rapala X-raps in blue back, perch and white ghost color. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted January 4, 2009 Super User Posted January 4, 2009 I dont fish for trout, but once I was goofing around with a Johnson Beetle Spin looking for bass and I nailed a 2# trout. I remember the look on this guy's face who was fishing for trout. He stammered "That's the biggest one I've ever seen come out of this lake! (Small stocked pond. No wild trout there) . He just about peed himself when I threw it back because I didn't have a trout stamp. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Thanks guys. tony, what color combo for inline's have you found to be a success if you don't mind me asking? I could be wrong here, or I at least guarantee that die-hard trout enthusiasts will disagree, but I don't think color matters with inline spinners. I usually use some combination of gold or silver with white or yellow or blue or red. I haven't noticed a difference. Even if it does make a difference, I'm not sure that anyone could define the conditions in which a certain color would work better than the next. It all comes down to experimentation, and results that come from experimentation are anything but scientific since there's no way to control the variables properly. Just use something that looks kinda like a minnow. Quote
