Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 21, 2008 Super User Posted December 21, 2008 Nothing big, but a lot of fun and not bad for 90 minutes of fishing. 8 runners, 1 jack and 1 bluefish at Boynton Beach, Florida, considering a lack of bait and the fall mullet run about done. Picked up about 7-8 lb bass in a canal on the way home, I estimate them on how easy or hard they are to drag up the side of the canal.....lol. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted December 23, 2008 Super User Posted December 23, 2008 Try this out. Take one of those runners, about 10 inches or bigger, and free line it out to sea with a balloon attached to your line, about 5 feet up from the runner. Do this on an outgoing tide or when the wind is out of the west, although I hate fishing with west wind. You will catch king fish, baracuda and shark. Very fun. Use a 4/0 reel or Shiano TLD 25 or something of that size. Hold on tight. Quote
Bassboss Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Last year we were KILLING the blues on spanish sardines and shrimp! As far a live bait you can't beat a greeni or a runner like BB said, last year I also caught a nice tarpon on a runner. BTW, I like to use a light weight and no float for live bait. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 30, 2008 Author Super User Posted December 30, 2008 That isn't my style of fishing but I have seen it done. Not really the ballon thing as the prevailing wind comes from the east especially in winter and it's a bit too strong. Would work in the summer months with milder winds and mostly from the west. What they do here is fish for shark in icw at the boynton inlet at night. Guys will put a glow stick in a gallon milk bottle with a breakaway knot and float it out a long long way. I have caught quite a few shark while drift fishing and I'm not crazy for it. This past summer while fishing for kings off the Woolbright tower I caught 2 about 6' each ( can't really give you a weight) one on 6000 spinning reel and the other on an avet mxj conventional. The pull is very powerful and each one took about 1 hour 20 minutes to bring along side the boat. At 63 years old my back was in traction for 2 weeks, lol. You can catch smaller shark sight casting in the backwater, which I've done, using soft plastics on a jig head. That's more my style. Quote
