Feeding Catfish

While at my friend's private farm pond last week he came by in his truck and said he was going to feed the catfish as it was something to see.

So he got out a bag of Aqua Pellets Catfish Food and started spreading it on the pond's surface.

Man, talke about catfish coming from all over the place, even  the ones by our feet that we had idea were there.

There must have been at least two dozen beautiful Channel Catfish hitting the pellets in a feeding frenzy.  Fins, splashes, wide heads and mouths sucking up the pellets like a vacuum cleaner.

And no matter what we threw at them, Senkos, plastics, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, etc., they would not even look at the lures. Their minds were on the pellets.

Lots of fun watching them feed.

Another farmer was with us and he has a friend with a farm pond who has a metal pipe in the pond by his dock and when he hits the metal pipe with his pocket knife the catfish come running as they know he is going to feed them.

I think I will try to find the Aqua Pellets and try feeding the catfish at some of my local ponds.

And the catfish kept playing around in the pond for at leat an hour after they were fed. They would not hit any baits; just playing in the shallows and the middle of the pond trying to find a pellet or two.

There were some B-I-G cats in the pond and I will try to catch them on my next visit.

If you want to catch them, and they'll only feed on pellets, give 'em pellets! If the pellets are large enough (1/2-inch or more), try gluing one to the back of a small (#6. #8 or #10) hook. (Use a fly-rod if you have one -- you won't regret the fight you get!) Alternatively, put a handful of pellets into a glass dish, pour on a little boiling water, let them soak for a few mins and then mush them into a paste. You'll need to experiment with the quantity of water to get the paste consistency right. Just try and keep your bait size close to that of the pellets, and keep your hook size appropriate also.

at our old house we had a nice size pond and we would feed  ours cat food or dog food and they would do exactly what you said just swarm the surface. but we used chicken livers to catch them. and there are some monsters in there.

I was thinking of throwing dog food but I would rather throw catfish pellets.

I've only caught catfish on hotdogs, i bet they resemble pellets. Have fun.

My grandpa feeds his cat fish dog food every night. It is so awesome to watch. He's got about 7 of them that come around. They're like his pets. He's even got names for some of them.
