Rob.Atl Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 Hey i wanted to try fishing for crappie but im not sure what to use, I saw one of my freinds catch one with a blue/black rat l trap when fishing for bass. any suggestions? Quote
Super User Marty Posted May 18, 2008 Super User Posted May 18, 2008 They'll take a variety of artificials. If I was targeting them I'd use crankbaits and grubs on jigheads, obviously downsized from bass lures, even though they often hit large lures. Quote
rich64 Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Go to walmart and find crappie magnets. We use them all the time ,They work really well. Quote
xboxfisherman Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 2 1/8 oz jigheads, tied about a foot apart. Random twister tail grub on the end. We all went crappie fishing saturday. It was slow but we probably got about 50 between the ten of us. Couldn't really get a pattern though. We were using red/green, black/white, clear/blue, etc. Check your regs too, might not be legal to use two jigheads. Quote
Denea Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I have always had success with Rapala floaters (perch)... they were hammering them Quote
crazy4bass1 Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 small tubes will catch any panfish out there i prefer black but red and green are good too Quote
TrailerHook Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 small tubes will catch any panfish out there i prefer black but red and green are good too How do you fish the tubes for crappie? I bought some small squirmin' squirts (red head, green skirt) and some 1/8 and 1/16 oz. squirt head jigheads, but haven't had a chance to try them out yet. Do you cast into cover and then do a steady retrieve? Or do you fish them more like you would a worm with a sink/hop/retrieve/repeat pattern? I think I also saw some guys suspending them under a slip bobber once also. I was just curious to know what the best technique was for using these small tubes around cover for crappie and bluegill. Super User FishTank Posted May 20, 2008 Super User Posted May 20, 2008 For Crappie I like a 1/8 jig head and some type of live minnow or just a plain old bobber and a minnow. I also have had success with inline spinner baits and a 1/8oz jig head with a single tail grub. Quote
dches Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Just spent 45 minutes throwing a white and black bettle spin, killed'em. Unfortunatly I had to admit to wife she was right. Quote
hawgchaser Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Go to walmart and find crappie magnets. We use them all the time ,They work really well. Are these from the same people that make trout magnets? I have heard they are really good. As for crappie, I have found nothing better than blakemore roadrunners. Pink, red, yellow heads with a white grub. But be prepared to lose a ton of them They get hung on everything! Bass Pro makes something similar called the triple ripple with weedguard. Quote
GreedBall Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 i catch crappie whenever im not targeting them, ill catch them on nightcrawlers mostly and yesterday i caught 2 nice 2-3 pound crappie on grubs along with a few bass Quote
BirdNestBen Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 My fishing buddy turned me on to this lure.... it's a Bass Pro shops copy of the Roostertail.... It's only .99 and try the one with the yellow feathers and silver blade in 1/8 oz. I've caught more on this lure than any other....... Quote
Mike 12345 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I catch crappie whenever im not targeting them, ill catch them on nightcrawlers mostly and yesterday i caught 2 nice 2-3 pound crappie on grubs along with a few bass All I have to do to catch Crappie is to fish for LMB. I catch them all the time on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, Strike King Red Eye Shad..... I like catching them, but I wish I were catching the fish I was actually trying for. Quote
moby bass Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Small jig head, curly tail grub, Berkley crappie Nibble. Quote
wisturkeyhunter Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Small grubs or tubes on a jighead. Usually add a jig spinner too. Quote
Bayou Bass Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 90% of the time I use tube jigs under a cork. We catch em in pretty shallow water most of the time. They tend to hold really tight to structure. I use a 1/32 oz. jig head about 2 foot under the cork. I prefer using any tube jig with a chartreuse skirt (black and chartreuse is my go to color). I retrieve is pretty slow. I will jig once or twice, take up the slack, and wait for the bite. They usually hit on the stop. Other then tube jigs I like to throw beetle spins. Usually the smaller size (I can't remember what weight). I love to fish like this especially because my wife enjoys it. She grew up fishing like this so she rarely turns down a trip!! Enjoy Quote
