Del from philly Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 My guess is its a crappie/sun fish hybrid, but im not sure. this thing had a belly! Quote
Jake. Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 It looks like a big Green Sunfish. http://bobbyanddereckscustomlures.com/another site_Green_Sunfish.jpg Quote
SenkoBasser Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 It looks like a white crappie / yellow perch hybrid. I've never seen stripes on a crappie or sunfish. Quote
Jay_G Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Definately part sunfish. Never did see stripes. I am looking at the one I have in my aquarium as I type this and can't figure that one out. Is that the only one you caught like that? Quote
Super User T-rig Posted June 28, 2008 Super User Posted June 28, 2008 Looks like a regular green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) to me. Your fish was caught after dark and alot of fish are lighter in color at night. Some have stripes and some don't. Quote
Del from philly Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 i dont think its a regular sunfish, iv been fishing for a while, and the jaw just didnt seem the same. it was bigger than most sunfish that size thanks for the comments, keep em coming Quote
Del from philly Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 its a shame becausae it seems liek the flash brought out the sunfish qualities which makes sence, but before the pic this thing was all grey with thick lines also wasnt circlular like a sunfish, was longer and almost square wih the belly Quote
-HAWK- Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Thats definetly just a sunfish. The sunfish i have in my tank turn a greyish color late at night when the tank light is off. Quote
Evan Pease Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Cross between this guy and a pumpkinseed or sunfish? Quote
SuskyDude Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Green sunfish all the way. The "hybrid wagon" easy easy to jump on, but rarely takes you to the truth. : Green sunfish are not circular like bluegill, they are longetr and more square shaped as you mentioned. Large black spot on second dorsal, green wavy lines on cheek and opercle, dusky bars on side. And finally the real kicker: it was hard to make out, but I can count 9 anal fin rays. DING DING DING we have a winner: Green Sunfish. Thats a big one by the way! Congrats. Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 1000% positive that is a green sunfish. There are tons of them here. They have big mouths and seem like they could be a hybrid, but really they are pure sunfish Quote
hawgchaser Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Definitely a sunfish. I catch them all the time on a shakeyhead. All the ones I catch look like that one. Its no hybrid but fun none the less. Quote
Troutfisher Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 That's most definitely a green sunfish. I've caught all kinds of them and I definitely know one when I see one. Those things will hit my lures when I'm fishing for bass. Quote
Pegleg Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 That's a Red Ear Sunfish. We call em Shellcrackers here in Florida. I think Green Sunfish is a local name. The true Green sunfish don't get that big. Redear's or Shellcracker's get over 2 pounds. That one looks to be full of eggs. Quote

Doesn't have the red operculum that is the trademark of the red ear (Lepomis microlophus) : All signs clearly point to Lepomis Cyanellus, or commonly referred to as the green sunfish. And yes, they can get that big. Quote
wickyman Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 It's just a regular old bluegill! I caught tons of them... That looked just like that. It's a female, if you look at the belly, it is obviously pregnant. They are still spawning on Clear Lake, so we have seen so many of them, that it's not funny. Different colors, different sizes. Some with square bellies, some with rounder bellies, all the same fish though. Quote
flippinstick Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 That is Defineitly a green sunfish. The mouth does look thinner though than what I have seen. It has the same look as a crappie's mouth to me. Quote
Lincoya Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 I agree. That's a green sunfish. We call them Warmouths in Tennessee. Definately not a Shellcracker. Gene Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 That's a Green Sunfish!! My best friend stocked them in his pond up-north. They are more bass shaped than the round of a regular Sunfish. Falcon Quote
