Tokyo Tony Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I remember the first rock bass I caught...I had never even heard of them before that day. I was fishing alone, and I caught it on a little jerkbait. I grabbed it, and was absolutely positive that I had caught some very rare, strange hybrid of a crappie and a smallmouth. I took a picture on my cell phone (after briefly considering taking it to the Fish & Game Dept for analysis), showed it to my brother, and he said, "That's a rock bass you idiot." I felt kinda stupid Seriously though, those fish are half smallmouth, half crappie. Smallie eyes and color, with crappie markings and mouth. I think they're cute :-* Quote
JigNBig Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I caught one of these this weekend on a finesse jig and i swore i had a LM and bream mixed breed. Until i got home and looked it up then i felt dumb. Quote
Evan Pease Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Is that the same thing as a redeye bass? I catch a lot of those. Quote
cpvenom Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 No, red eye bass (shoal bass) are different from rock bass. Red eye bass are shaped like "bass", while rock bass are shaped more like panfish. Quote

"Red-Eye" is a local common name for Rock Bass in some parts of the country. Just like some parts of the country call N. Pike "Jackfish", etc, etc. Quote
