Assuming you are fishing in current, you need a weight that makes contact with the bottom, but doesn't force you to "drag the bottom". Weight will vary with the amount of current.

I like a split shot about 18" from the hook.

Yes, for Rapala Countdowns and original Floating Rapalas.

If you fish spoons, you will wnat to use a swivel with them,

too. However, for single hooks I tie direct..

Another lure I highly recommend is Panther Martin,

gold blade, black body with chartreuse spots. Just cast and

retrieve without any additional action.
