don't know the regs in all the states, but after LMB I think I like catchin snook best.

Some days though redfish catch my fancy.

Then again sea trout are way fun,

of course flounder are tasty

but there is always...............

I haven't caught a snook in years. I used to go out to Sebastian Inlet every year but I just haven't had the funds lately. I always went during the summer which was the off season so there were less people to fend off. Used to just slay them off the rocks at night on the out going tide with minnow baits like Husky Jerks, Windcheaters, Bomber Long A's, and Crystal Minnows. Bigest I ever got on a plug was 36". One day I was droping a 3lb Blue runner off the side of the pier to mess with the Jewfish and a 44" Snook just hammered it! I need to scan the pic of that fish.

Another fish that puts up one hell of a fight that you didn't mention are ladyfish. I caught one that had to have gone 7lbs or so. It gave my medium action baitcasting tackle a run for its money :)

Yessss ladyfish, the poor man's tarpon.

I also didn't mention Jack Crevalle.  wow talk about fighters  :o

Avid you'd rather catch a bass than a snook?  Man, I'd take a snook over a bass anyday  ;D  I caught a few last summer during my trip to Miami.  We took a guided trip out of Flamingo in the Everglades and were catching the snook that were cruising along the beach in the surf, then we got some on the grass flats.  It was pretty freakin awesome  8-)

Nice pic Gator! :)

I second that.  If southern california had the kind of inshore fishery that Florida has, I don't think I would be on this forum.  ;)

Don't get me wrong, I eat, drink, and sleep bass fishing, but that's just because we don't have Snook.

Snook are an awesome game fish to catch- from fly rod to heavy tackle.  They are also fair-good table food, better than bass anyway IMHO.  Problem is, the slot limit and bag limit suck.  Also, it's hard to fish many spots without a boat unless you like fishing from bridges, in Palm Beach  County anyways.   Saltwater is as expensive as freshwater fishing if not more.  I couldn't and wouldn't live in an area where I couldn't do both.  I caught one last night on my Calcutta with #17 mono using a Yozuri lure and man what a fight.   Lost it though.

We don't have snook in Virginia, thus I've never caught one.  I understand, though, that the gill plates are very sharp and you can't hold them under the gill because they will cut you.  Is that really true?

There is a portion outside of the gill plate that is RAZOR sharp.  Will slice through #60 mono like butter but you can hold them by the gills if you know how to.  I won't boat them by the gills or even hold them by the gills unless I'm keeping it.

I've lipped every snook I've caught. Of course more often than not it required two hands ;)

X1

i went snookin friday night/morning and boated 3 slobs over 25 pounds. released them of corse. also jumped 2 tarpon in the 70 pound range and boated one around 50 pounds. live finger mullet got all of those fish. the best thing was all the fish were caught in a hot water canal in western broward county.

I had a snook "gill plate" me last year.....Man, he nearly sliced my thumb off.....bled like a pig.......still.....landed and released.

they closed the season a long time ago but people are definitely catching them. Not me, because I spend my saltwater time in mosquito lagoon, but my buddy has a place in venice and he has been catching them.

I go snook fishing just about everyday now.  They fight wayyyyyy better than lmb.  If anyone around broward wants to fish for them I am always down. Heres a couple I caught this last week.
