Bronzeback117 Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 What is a good leader for pike and walleye? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Super User Posted January 28, 2008 You don't need a special leader for walleye. I've caught many over the years with only mono. Pike require some sort of steel leader and make sure they are at least 12" - 18" long! Pike love to come up from behind and engulf a lure....leader and all! Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 29, 2008 Super User Posted January 29, 2008 As the man said, no leader is required for walleye. For pike, I've had success with short leaders of 5-6". However, I don't run into really big pike, so you would probably want a longer leader if you do. Quote
Bronzeback117 Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 Have you tried the Terminator Titanium Leader? Super User RoLo Posted January 29, 2008 Super User Posted January 29, 2008 Have you tried the Terminator Titanium Leader? BINGO! (it's a no-brainer) For walleye use the same stuff you'd use for bass. For pike you need wire, otherwise you'll land every pike except your Personal Best! I've tried every wire leader available and would only recommend one: TERMINATOR TITANIUM LEADER 30 lb x 0.014 Dia Smoke Black (BPS) ADVANTAGES OF TITANIUM > Kink-Resistant (In contrast, stainless steel wire is kink-prone and breaks when kinked) > Thinner Diameter (18-lb Sevalon = 0.019 <> 20-lb Titanium Wire = 0.012) > Cut-Proof (Titanium is more cut-proof than stainless-steel) > No Sleeves, No Crimping Pliers (Unlike other wire leaders, titanium is joined with a knot) > Shock-Resistant (Incredible but true, titanium wire actually stretches like monofilament nylon) > Never Corrodes (Titanium is more corrosion-proof than stainless-steel braided wire and never corrodes even in saltwater) Roger Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted January 29, 2008 Super User Posted January 29, 2008 Nothing better than Terminator's titanium leaders for pike or muskie. But they are expensive. If you have a bunch of muskie lures and/or baits dedicated to pike, check out Tyger Wire leader material. It's a coated steel wire that you can tie a knot with. All of my muskie baits have this stuff tied on, with a good swivel tied to the other end. I just wrap the leader around the bait and put it back in the box with the swivel still attached. Just tie my braid to the swivel to swap baits. Ten feet of Tyger Wire will cost you ten bucks. I cut it into 5 leaders. Add a good swivel and you've got about three bucks in each one. A two turn clinch knot is what I've found to work best. Never had a problem with it. I've never used a leader for walleye, but I do use flouro line now for all my walleye fishing. A little extra abrasion resistance is a good thing. Just re-tie after every fish, and you shouldn't have any problems with the walleye. Cheers, GK Quote
