Walleye Tips from shore

Im looking to catch my first walleye, possibly more than 1 =)

Need some tips / advice.

I don't have a boat so i would be casting from shore.

From what i hear, sun down is the best time to go.. Rapala original floaters work good

Couple Questions.

1-What size lure should I be using? The small (normal size) ones or the giants?

2-What type of retrieve generally?

3-Do colours really matter when it's dark? Any general colours to stick with to be safe?

4-Any other lure suggestions other than a origional floater?

Any tips would be good, Just lookin to hook up some fish.

Not sure if your fishing a lake or river, but I fish for walleyes in a local river near me often. I toss small spinners, floating rapalas or storms and even small spoons with success. I use a variety of colors depending on water clarity, but have most of my luck on black and silver or tiger spoons. I try to fish them at dawn or dusk in or around deeper holes.

My shore experience with walleye has been limited to the Erie Canal, where the water is very murky green and maximum depth is ~10'. They readily take grubs on jigheads, but I've used crankbaits much more. They've taken a wide variety of cranks in various brands, sizes, shapes and colors. Some of the baits I use more than others are #5 Shad Raps, Bomber 6A, Deep Baby N, Deep Flat A and others.

Sundown is probably a good time, as they're reputed to be light-sensitive. However, that hasn't affected me because the water is so murky. However, other guys have told me that it's much harder to catch them during the day further downstream where the water is clearer.

Good luck. Walleyes can be good fighters, not acrobatic, but strong, consistently pulling toward the bottom.

the color i've had most success on from shore has been the black and gold rapala floater.  You might also try some of the shallow shad raps, or the standard shad raps depending on the depth you wnat to hit,  generally try to get them within a foot of the bottom on the retrieve.

For shorefishing, ive come to love these bigger baits. In still, or at least calmer water, i like to use a zoom fat albert (4") or a kalins lunker grub. (5") I have actually caught a fair amount of steelhead on these too. But another thing is the rapalas. I use either size hj10, and i actually have recently caught a 7lber on a hj 14. I always use silvery colors, that has given me my 4 biggest fish. (10lb, 7lb, 6.5lb, and 6lbers)

Stick with the hard jerkbaits (i.e.: XRap, Husky Jerk) and you'll do just fine
