Good top-water for stripers

I was just wondering what top-waters are producing/produced for you?  The local dam got a little more shallow because of the drought and I thought I might try something new.

Are the stripers even around anymore? In my area (NH) I've been told, "they moved on but you may catch a blue fish".

So, I haven't even bothered going.

Yes, stripers are still around although not in the bays.  Head out to the mouth of any large bay and look for the deep spots.  Right now, we have a hole called the sphinx hole that has cows just sitting there as we speak.  They are all but ready to head back to the Chesapeake, this is a major "staging point" I believe as the hole can be bone empty tomorrow.  When that hole doesn't mark fish anymore, it's over.

As for a topwater.. SPOOK!!!

I just found a favorite called the Sporty Spook made by hand by a guy named Joe in California.  The company name is Bodega Bay Lures and he should have them up for retail sale by the beginning of next year.  These things get it done.  I found out about them from Redlinerobert.  Joe made Robert a specially painted series for is Peacock trip to Brazil.  When I open my site, I will be asking Joe if he would like to sell through me. I was THAT impressed with the action on these things.

I have also asked him if he will be making freshwater sizes and Yes, he will, with a different hook as well.  The galv hooks are for salt plugs only.

Can't wait to try a 4 or 5" one for the largies

Also, when you are seeing rolling bass on top and they will njot hit the spooks, etc,..go just sub surface with a streamer fly (if possible) or a super fluke if no fly gear is available.  Local trick that works as like a charm.

Thanks guys.  Hookers, that looks great.  Down here in NC, guys that don't have boats (YET)  ;D, fish for stripers at dams.  It's a hit and miss kindda deal.  You have to be willing to fish for hours and pass up on the bass to get a striper.  Usually, the ones we get are BIG though.

That's another a nice thing about these super sized spooks, they cast a country mile for shore and surf fisherman.

What color pattern spook do you guys use most often?

I'm with LBH.  Joe is the man and makes some very nice lures.  If I'm not using his lures then Zara Spooks for sure.

Yeah those sporty spooks Joe makes look great. I'm on the same saltwater forum as redlinerobert so I've seen a bunch of his work. Lots of people been having good success on them; I just asked Joe for some quotes. Prices are very reasonable.

I have always done well in MD, NY on the musky size buzzbaits. BlueFox, Grim Reaper make larger bucktail style buzzbaits that really draw some good stripers up to surface.

You could also try Spro DAWG 100.  I have had some luck with them, although they are expensive.

My recommendation is not exactly a topwater but real close.......a Red Fin. In November here in Va. we can cast the Red Fin and just real it back slow so it makes a wake on top.....the stripers really crush it.
