Fish Man Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 i went out to a pond behinf my cousins house with my uncle yestersay and my only cath besides a snapping turtle was this catfish.well i am not to familiar with catfish and was wondering if anyone knows what kind this is P.S.im sorry for the crappy pic, it was from my cell phone Quote
GatorBK Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 I dunno it looks like a world record bullhead :-?....but it just may be the picture , I cannot see its head or tip of its tail real good. My guess would be a blue cat with an odd color Quote
Fish Man Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 BK i just looked at my pic and it isnt very big 2 pounds at the most(guessing from its size when i caught it) it just looked big because i had to get my phone really close to it to get a halfway decent pic of him/her...if it helps my uncle in the back ground is about 2 feet behind it Quote
GatorBK Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 ok it looked bigger in the pic , my guess is a bullhead then 99 percent sure, You can eat them but cut the fat meat out it gets strong. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 1, 2007 Super User Posted May 1, 2007 Did the tail have a severe fork? If so, channel cat. If it was rounded (and it appears to be so given the photo), bullhead. Quote
mossy500camo Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 No to hijack your thread. But... I just had to post a pic or two. Theis pic is a 35lb Blue cat that my nephew caught in Dec 2006. Quote
Fish Man Posted May 2, 2007 Author Posted May 2, 2007 ok as i already siad i dont know squat bout catfish and was wondering if you can lip them in the mouth like a bass??? BTW those are some huge fish ya got there Mossy Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 2, 2007 Super User Posted May 2, 2007 You can lip a cat, just be prepared to lose some skin. Think bass teeth multiplied by 20. I wore through the fingers of a new leather glove last summer running a trot line. Quote
camofish Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I would say it is either a brown or yellow bullhead. bullhead have more rounded tail and channel cats have for of a forked tail. Quote
TravisLovett Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 DO not lip a catfish, especially a large one. There teeth are like sand paper but what really hurts is there jaw pressure. Many times they'll chomp down and start barrel rolling. Its best to hold them by tightly holding there failfin, and placing your hand under there stomach. Rubber net is the best way though. Quote
bighed Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Down here it would be called a mud cat, aka bullhead Quote
MuchyMan Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 nice fish ;D looks like a bullhead or a discolored channel cat Quote
Don_B Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 ok as i already siad i dont know squat bout catfish and was wondering if you can lip them in the mouth like a bass??? You can with channel cats, don't do it with the other ones though, unless you have a crowbar handy to pry your thumb out. Quote
