Walleye tips

My home lake is stocked by the dnr for walleye and I have excellent walleye waters all around my area. I was wondering if there are any tactics that work for walleye with the bass gear? Is there anything that has been a proven producer for you guys? I would prefer to not have to get into all the ins and outs of trolling with planer boards and all that. I'm looking for simple tactics that would work.  I do own some crawler harnesses and was just looking to try something different if I am having a bad day on the bass.

1/8 oz ball jig heads...no color always worked best for me....some small fathead minnows or shiners work well too...run the hook down the mouth and out the gill...then stick it in the back of the minnow, but dont kill it if you can help it...this makes for easy casting as the bait is less likly to fly off the hook....throw it out, let it sit..hop it and drag it slowly back...if in a boat it also works by vertical jigging right on bottom, but use a swivel to prevent line twist....this is the way i did it in minnesota and it worked great....feel for the "tick" they can be very skeaky.....hope that helps

I agree, suspending jerkbaits work great! I'm also catching zander (very similar to walleye) on LC's LV-Max 500 on dropoffs.

I've been getting them on X-Raps and Shad Raps. Or else the old stand-by crawler harnesses. I also got a couple on spinnerbaits, but that is very unusual.

During the late part of last summer, I had a lot of luck with walleyes on jerkbaits. Worked them REALLY irractically. The only other bait I've caught them on is a Strike King Rocket Shad. I've caught literally all of mine on the upper Potomac. Nothing of any real size yet but had a few that chased a jerkbait before they saw the boat.  >

Regular rapala black/silver any size but not jointed fished as slow as possible but fast enuff to give it action right at dark thirty works like a charm...learned that one from my brother....

Hmmm! This is quite unlikely as the water temperature is at least 10 degrees centigrade above the maximum for zander spawning even at deeper waters (they also need a small amount of light penetration which governs how deep they will spawn). Zander require temperatures between 11 and 15 degrees Celsius for spawning, which in most Cyprus dams occur in January or February (and in some lowland reservoirs may not occur at all in mild winters).

Something for us European anglers to consider is that yes, walleye and zander do look very similar in outward appearance (the zander grows bigger, the walleye is a bit darker), they have similar habitat ranges, but they are genetically evolved to hunt for different species of prey. Could this mean that they are liable to be taken on different lures? Checking a bit on the internet, someone can see very few reports of american Walleyes being taken on spinnerbaits (in spite of the heavy usage), yet our experience here on Cyprus is that the european Zander hits spinnerbaits (and other large to very-large!) lures rather readily (and from the shore!)....

I spent five years in Europe in the Army. I fished pretty heavily. I found Zander to hit the saem lures walleye do and hit large Mepps I fished for Hecht with Pike to us. I fished only fromt he bank, but Zander will hit crankbaits very good. Same ones I  use here!!

Lately we have been tearing the walleye up, the lake is up the water is 75F and walleye are all over the shallows post spawn. We have boated 35 walleye in three evening with a five, a six and finally I busted a SEVEN POUNDER. But tones of small eyes.

We simply troll hot N tots, black back, silver sides, purple back wors well too. But we are using 8lb flourocarbon line, this allows us to get these down in 18-20 feet of water.

We found a cheapy lure that works better cost $2.50 so it dont hurt to bad to loose one. but we do loose a few on the bottom and in timber.

We wacthed with binos and counted the fish others were catching using jigs and minnows and they just ain't catch anything.

Wiggle warts will work too,  I think its more action than colors to a point. But the water is cloudy from rains.

We just came in and have 13 eyes over the 18 inch min length, with largest at 22 inchs.

We did not fish Memorial Day weekend as we felt to much boat traffic. But tonight was good as has been Tues, Weds, and Thurs of the last two weeks. For us its a 12 miles run one way to the best area I have found and worth every penny.
