captaininsaneo Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 today at the local lake i saw a carp, 3 or 4 times, swimming upside down. when it noticed me it would roll over and swim off. why the h*ll was it doing this? Quote
Super User T-rig Posted May 1, 2007 Super User Posted May 1, 2007 It probably had a bad hangover! ;D ;D ;D Quote
deadeye32. Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 were you doing cartwheels? :-? That's strange, I hope someone has a serious answer for this one. Quote
captaininsaneo Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 lol, no cartwheels and i wasnt dumping vodka in the water. It seriously did this two or three times (once it was off in the distance) The first time i saw it I thought it was dead. Quote
captaininsaneo Posted May 1, 2007 Author Posted May 1, 2007 "Any disease which affects the nervous system , muscular system or swim bladder can cause abnormal swimming behaviour. Any debilitating disease that causes weakness will also lead to inability to swim properly, and so it isn't surprising that fish which are terminally ill will be seen swimming abnormally - even up-side down." I had to look it up. So most likely something was wrong with it, swimbladder or otherwise. Now the really curious part is, if something was wrong with it, how did it flip over when it saw me... twice. Quote
deadeye32. Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 actually I just thought of this but sometimes in our home lake when they are spawning they are going crazy and flying around everywhere near the bank. There are times when they get so entangled with each other that they look like they are going sideways and upsidedown. So that might be it. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted May 1, 2007 Super User Posted May 1, 2007 the other day I saw carp doing the same thing but they were also jumping out of the water like sharks as if somethign was chasing them. Quote

Avalonjohn44 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I've seen a lot of carp swimming upside down. Can't ever figure out why. Time to google it. Quote
Pond-Pro Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I seen a bluigill swim violently along the surface upside down, and then later I found out it was doing this because it had part of it's tail bit off. As far as the carp.... maybe it has somthing to do with their spawning rituals? :-? Quote
RecMar8541 Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I think what you witnessed was a rarely seen phenomenon. The blue angels carp team. There aquatic formations are unparralelled! Quote
