Musky in Wisconsin

I booked a cabin On Minocqua lake and I heard it was a pretty good fishing lake. I am planning on targeting northerns and musky but once I caught one I heard u can like hold their gills in to stun them so u can get the hook out, take a picture, etc. I was just wondering if this was true and if not wat can i do to do the same sort of stuff. Also I have a few of the worden's flatfish and I read they are great musky lures. Is this true or not and if not wat lures do u think are good for them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck, have fun and don't stick your hand it it's mouth. Also, be careful how far you put your fingers up into the gills. The teeth go way back in the mouth. I did that one as a kid when my dad caught a muskie. OUCH!

If you do catch one, be careful of their gill plates. They are very sharp and

can also slice your hand open.

Usually what I do it my finger tips into the lower portion of the gill covers

near the bottom jaw. That way I am not going to injure the gills and my

fingers are in no real danger of being cut or getting bit.

If you get a big muskie (or pike for that matter) don't keep them out of

water very long. It takes a lot out of them during the fight and if you fool

with them too much it can be very tough to revive them.

Look into using jigs or soft plastics of these fish. Its not the norm, but in-fisherman published a lot of articles on this, and i tried it........it works! Caught my pb pike on my first trip using plastics. It was on a 5" leech imitation on a jighead, and the pike weighed 10lbs. Anyways other good lures are big husky jerks, spinnerbaits, and give livebait a try. You dont need to go out and spend a fortune on giant foot long musky lures that cost 20-30 bucks apiece. Oversized bass lures will work just fine, yet it wouldnt hurt to hav a suik and a depthraider handy.

Depending on when you are going, I would HIGHLY recommend taking some big bucktails with you. The Linders can/will attest that the highest number of big muskies are taken with this lure.

As was mentioned before...suicks, depth/shallow/top raiders and glide baits would be good choices.

As JT said, if you do get a big ski, try to limit the amount of time its out of the water! Here's one I wasn't able to CPR last year.

I was fishing for them at the time and was properly geared. The fight only lasted a couple of minutes but I still wasn't able to revive her. I big net will help out alot! That way you can keep the fish in the water until you're ready to pick it up for a pick. A long hook out tool will save your hands and fingers too! In '04, I was starting to get back into musky fishing and only had a small pair of pliers to remove hooks. My first decent musky for MD quickly changed my mind as it buried two of the hooks of the rear treble hook into my fingers (ummm, while the other hook was still attached to the fish). Wasn't fun! Another safety item would be Lindey's gloves. They will protect your hands when you pick the fish up! My fishing partner showed me his, had me put it on and handed me one of his bucktails and asked me to see if I could put the hook through the glove. Causiouly I tried over and over, adding a little more pressure each time and the hook would not go through. Convinced me right there they were worth it! Hope this helps!
