Bass Pro Shops have fantastic tube jigs that I really like to use. The Wally Marshall "Mr. Crappie" line is really good, too. I like to use a 1/32 to 1/16oz jig head with these. Crappie are particular, and I don't want them scared away by a huge hook.

these are the best crappie tubes and jig heads on the market hands down. i have hundreds of them in a few different colors (yellow/white is the best)....... if it's legal where you live i would suggest using minnows (i can't use them where i live).

I'm not a huge Crappie fisherman but when I fish for them I use the Berkley gulp crappie nibbles, Roadrunner or RR type spinner jigs ( small mariboo 132 or 1/16 oz type jigs with the spinner that rides under the jig. I also use waxworms at certain times of the year.

I second the live minnow.

Can't beat it when you find them.

I catch 'em all the time on 1/16 oz jigheads with a small plastic tube on them. The best color combos that have worked for me are a pink jighead with pink/white tube, and a chartreuse jighead with a chartreuse/white tube.

A lot of top crappie fishermen prefer marabou jigs over minnows (most crappie tourneys allow both live and artificial bait). The argument is that minnows are time consuming, re-baiting after every fish. A couple of successful local tourney guys have also determined that jigheads with painted on eyes outperform solid colored jigheads.

That said, I am not a top crappie fisherman and I have my best luck with minnows. :)

Here you can get minnows at any bait house. They keep then year around. Crappie fishing here is BIG bussiness for the bait shops.

I would crappie fish with my grandfather when I was a kid. He had a pontoon boat just for that purpose. We would run 50+ cane poles off the side with live minnows and I would run my little 8 y/o butt off pulling in fish and re-baiting. But nothing was more exciting than pulling in a 3lb bass on a cane pole!

I think that it was Al Linder who said that when the crappie are biting, he could out fish anyone using live minnows by using a white grub of some sort.

When I go crappie fishing I generally use 2 1/2 or 3 inch curley tail grubs in Chartreuse  for I enjoy fish them.   Just pack up and go no stopping at the bait shop to get minnows or keeping them alive.

When we are running a crappie tournament and ask the top five spots what they was using 4 out of 5 will say minnows.

For me i have been catching them with  a 1/32 jig with a 1 inch yellow, neon grub with glittler inside. They have been pouding it the past couple weeks. My biggest is around 2lbs give or take.

if you have the time and availability-minnows-now doubt about it.

I crappie fish almost as much as a bass fish.  I rarely have the time and energy to deal with live bait. Now I primarily use BPS Squirming Squirts.  YUM also makes the Wooly Beavertail in a panfish size. Used them a little this year with great success as well.

a couple thoughts from my experience:

bigger baits catch bigger crappie.  I use primary 1.5 inch and 2" baits.....less fish on 2", but bigger fish

if you aren't catching crappie on one color-switch. I have caught crappie on nearly every color but anything with chartruese is usually a winner.

The best for me is Southern Pro Triple tailed grubs on a 1/16 or 1/32 oz jig.  Favorite color is the white grub with chartreuse tails.  Other colors that work for me are blue grub/white tail, red grub/chartreuse tail, and Black grub/chartreuse tail.

No doubt in my mind. I am with Al Linder on this one. I have only seen one time fishing for crappies that I wished I had minnows instead of a jig. I have outfished many people who were trying to use minnows. They catch 1 and I catch 5.
