scott000 Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 what should i use to catch the bluegill (in terms of artificials)? insect mimmicing lures? Quote
Got Bass? Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 For bigger bluegill use a small crappie jig.................but if you just want to catch a crap load of them use a fly. BLUEGILL ROCK. (So do rock bass) ;D Quote
scott000 Posted November 26, 2006 Author Posted November 26, 2006 i have a tiny panfish popper. will that work? Quote
Super User Marty Posted November 27, 2006 Super User Posted November 27, 2006 i have a tiny panfish popper. will that work? Don't know, I've never used topwater for them. But they will readily take a variety of artificial lures. I used to use a small Kastmaster spoon, but these days I use small crankbaits, mainly a Rapala Mini Fat Rap or Rapala Countdown, size 3. I suspect they would also take inline spinners, jigs and other appropriate-size lures. Quote
Bream Master Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 You can use flies that look like spiders. I have one called "the bream killer." Wal-Mart has them. It works pretty good. If you don't know how to use it on fly fishing gear, put in a spinning gear and use a light split shot weight. Quote
scott000 Posted November 27, 2006 Author Posted November 27, 2006 so i can use a fly on light tackle? Quote
Got Bass? Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 you can, but if you use regular mono the fly will sink. you have to use floating fly fishing line. Quote
Murray Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 beetle spin! i caught a three lb bluegill in may with this Quote
camofish Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 little tube jigs, paddle tail jigs, curly tail jigs, any little jig for that matter. 8-) Different size jigheads for depth control. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 I have caught plenty of bluegill that were in decent size while fishing for bass. I found the REBEL small crayfish, crickhopper, and bumble bee lures to be productive. Also little surface popers and small inline spinners work well too. ;D Quote
scott000 Posted December 6, 2006 Author Posted December 6, 2006 beetle spin! i caught a three lb bluegill in may with this can a beetle spin catch little guys too? Quote
chs773 Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 deff. fly fishing. Fly fishing for blue gills is loads of fun. Me and my friends use tiny flies or little poppers Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted December 7, 2006 Super User Posted December 7, 2006 so i can use a fly on light tackle? You can also throw a fly with a casting bubble or even a bobber. Both will work. Quote
rocknfish9001 Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 There is a casting bubble i think its called rainbow float or something like that. It is a clear plastic bubble that you tie on a couple feet in front of your fly. Almost ANY fly will work, but the little spider ones are superb. The are made of foam with rubber legs, so the last forever. Btw, size 0 and 1 mepps work pretty good, so do small panther martins. Quote
LookinForLunkers Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I use the Gulp Earthworms that come in the small jars. You can get them anywhere usually. Just thread them on a hook like you would a real worm, put a bobber a couple of feet above, and you'll be pulling blue gill out all day long. It's the only thing I ever use. Quote
New 2 Bass Posted December 22, 2006 Posted December 22, 2006 I kill the Bluegills with a grilled Ball Park Frank. All Beef. ;D I cut it into little chunks and hide a #1 circle hook in it. If they are on to you, down size to a #4 hook and smaller chunk. I used to use a ball of ready made dough. Got it in a tube out of the grocers fridge. Way to messy. And the dogs are money. Al Quote
Super User Munkin Posted December 23, 2006 Super User Posted December 23, 2006 I do not target them but I catch a lot of them on bass lures every year. This year I caught one on a 8" zoom lizard and a LC pointer 100sp. Allen Quote
