Grouper I've caught those before, use to be a first mate on a charter fishing boat

Very cool video. When he made the comment about a reel having that much drag would cause you to change your life, I was thinking the same thing. You would have to be in great shape to handle a fight like that-if not it just might kill you. :-?

That's a Jewfish, also called goliath grouper, the world-record weighed 804 lbs.

They're a protected species in Florida.

If I was fighting a 500 lb plus fish I would want to have something in which to seat my rod handle.  He had the rod handle stuck between his legs.  I cringe when I think of the damage that could have occurred.   ;)

Good grief man...I see that...and am amazed...but have absolutely no desire to fight a fish that outweighs and is stronger than I am. Awesome clip...not quite a "world record" but a monster nonetheless. Shouldn't he have been strapped into a fish fighting chair or something to fight a fish that large?

:o 500 lb caught on "light tacke"

The main line was 400lbs and the leader was 200lbs. Is this considered light tackle?

First off, what a COOOOL  fish ! :-) I love those things ! They look so much like a gigantic Largemouth Bass :-) They have just got to be related somewhere millions of years back, before freshwater fish came in from the salt. I'd love to have a replica of a 400 to 600 lb'er, painted like a Largemouth :-)

Hey PA, I'm quite sure the deck hand was getting himself confused (with the excitement all) I'm sure it was a 200 lb mainline, with 400 lb leader. Light ? On the contrary, this is about as heavy as it gets for sportfishing purposes, but not too awefully heavy for a fish like that.

Speaking of the deck hand getting tongue tied, it wasn't both 80" long, and 60 plus inches "long" too. Girth ! He meant to say girth ! I guess I would be a little bit beside myself too though :-)

Very cool,

Fish

PS, Sure would like to see some giant fish catches like this in HD.

Not light tackle at all, hence the " "   :)  Still cool to watch wouldn't you say?

I think that he meant that he was using 200lb leader material as his main line and 400lb leader material for his actual leader.  If anyone has ever fished for grouper before, they know how hard those fish hit.  I can only imagine the hit of a 500lb one.  I think that the reason he was not strapped in or using a rod holder is because if he did and caught a world record, it would not count.

Yes, it was an awesome fish and the Angler was dog tired after he and the deck hand got it on board what a fight for the ages.

Rolo is correct about the Jewfish, aka Giliath Grouper being protected. Actually I think they are protected by the Federal Government as well. Huge fine for keeping one. I believe it is up to $10,000 and a nice prison sentence. Anyway they are cool, I once caught small gag grouper and I thought I would never get him off the bottom. I could only imagine what that monster would do. ;D
