pickerelpiney Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 my friend and i hit up a local lake that produces a lot of nice bass and got these nice guys instead. I know most people hate pickerel, but they are a lot fun at this size. Quote

Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted October 26, 2006 Super User Posted October 26, 2006 gotta love catching the toothies....thats what we call them around here too! Quote
tipptruck1 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Well me and my buddy have never caught a prickle. But we do catch there larger family member the pike a lot. The biggest was 30 inches and about 6 lbs. We caught a bunch of pike all about 25 inches and 5lbs this summer. Quote
mjhutch1116 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I really enjoy catching both pike and pickeral. There have been many fishing trips where the bass were not biting but the pike or pickeral have been and my pb for pickeral is 22in, and my pb for pike is 25in. Do not fish for pike as much. Have not been lucky enough to hook into a big one yet. They are both alot of fun to catch and will both jump out of the water almost like a bass as well. Question for you guys, have you ever seen a pickeral with a blue mouth and blue tint to his fins? Caught one the other weekend that looked like he had been rolling around in blue cotton candy and then ate it. Have never saw one like that before. Matt Quote

Super User Marty Posted October 26, 2006 Super User Posted October 26, 2006 Pickerel can be both pesky and fun to catch. Not everyone agrees, but I've always felt that they fight better than largemouth. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted October 27, 2006 Super User Posted October 27, 2006 PickerelPiney, I'm with you, I love catching chain pickerel. The scenery in your pictures looks so familiar. I realize that the Jersey pine barrens all look alike, but it reminds me of Bamber Lake and Double-Trouble. Roger Quote

Roger Bamber lake is good fishing , went there for the first timefew weeks ago and my friend nailed a big bass around six pounds. GIANT pickerel too. I wanted to get up into double trouble parks lake back in there but havent had a chance. These guys i caught in one of sand plants that we have out here. Its right off rt. 539 warren grove. Quote

BucketmouthAngler13 Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 Yeah, really how are you supose to hold those darn slimy things? I always bring a net to land pickerel. It is almost inpossible otherwise. I hear holding them by the gills can rip them. i once ripped a gill, and the pickerel died. So i usualy hold them right behind the gill and right infront of the tail. And IMHO, pickerel fight just as good as bass, if not better. Quote

The best way to hold them is to put your hand over thier head and push your index finger and thumb on the gills. There is a spot where the gill plate and the body meet...when you push the gill plate down it is flush with the body. Put your thumb and index finger under the gill plate and push. It has the same affect that lipping a bass does. Or get a Boga grip....but thats gonna cost ya...see picture below. Edit-The only thing wrong with this picture is where the guy's finger are in the gills. Put them over the gill plate so that when the fish squirms it won't injure its gills. Quote
Dirk_Jig---Lure Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Me and LBH actually target them sometimes in the spring when they are running crazy. Considered a junk fish to many, but to us a great fight is a great fight. I think he had senko77 out there this spring and they had a "snakey" day. Lots of fun no matter how you slice it. They also do a fine job at helping the snapping turtles keep the bluegill population from exploding. fishrulz- Be careful when holding this way. I like to do the same but put my fingers right on the gill plate so they cant slip up and catch a gill if the fish squirms, but of course we all know pickerel NEVER squirm, lol, yea right! JUST DON"T LIP THEM!! lol Quote
