RobbyZ5001 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I have been searching for vehicles for a good amount of time now. I decided I want a cheaper truck under 7000 that is 4x4. I need a vehicle to tow my small 16ft boat. I have found a few, but i'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on any. I have been lucky enough to get your advice in the past, and I would appreciate it again. Thank you in advance. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=295156333&dealer_id=73449&car_year=1998&doors=&systime=&position=top&model=&search_lang=en&start_year=1981&body_style=TRUCKS&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&highlightFirstMakeModel=&search_type=used&distance=100&min_price=&drive=4+wheel+drive&rdm=1300375752961&marketZipError=false&advanced=y&fuel=&keywords_display=&sownerid=21355912&lastBeginningStartYear=1981&end_year=2012&make3=GMC&showZipError=n&make2=FORD&certified=&engine=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&body_code=32&transmission=Automatic&default_sort=mileageASC&max_mileage=&model3=&address=18071&color=&sort_type=priceDESC&model2=&max_price=7000&awsp=false&make=CHEV&seller_type=b&num_records=100&cardist=23&standard=false I have also been checking out jeep grand cherokees. http://www.milhamtoyota.net/used/Jeep/2001-Jeep-Grand+Cherokee-561962b30a0a00650160a2f103942ebb.htm# What would you fellas feel comfortable paying for these vehicles? Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted March 17, 2011 Super User Posted March 17, 2011 I would have a tough time paying 7k for a vehicle with 100k miles. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted March 17, 2011 Super User Posted March 17, 2011 Are you going to use the vehicle for anything else besides a tow vehicle? If you plan on hauling stuff go with the Ford, but take into consideration the stepside bed is able to haul less crap. Plus when you own a pickup everyone you know will "need to borrow it" at some point in time. If you have alot of buddies then maybe the Jeep is the way to go. 100k isn't alot of miles IF the truck was cared for properly. Check the carfax report. Another thing to consider at 100k it may need tires which will be another $600-800.00 for either vehicle. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 I got them down to 5700 on the truck. It has 4 new tires and 3 used ones in the back that the owner included with it. The ball joints were replaced. Quote
b.Lee Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I wouldn't pay anything over 5K for a truck over 100K in mileage. But it would depend on year and model as well. 1980 - 100k vs 2005 with 100k is different. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 I'm taking it to my mechanic tomorrow for them to go over the truck. If it looks good I think my search for a truck is over. Quote
CanalStalkin Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I like the truck. V8 will have plenty of power and the stepside looks good IMO. Low miles to boot. Quote
hootersdoug Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I think 5700 is a good deal. It looks clean. Id say pull the trigger if your mechanic says its ok. Quote

Look at it this way...You were comfortable paying 7k for a truck you can get for 5700. You can fix a good bit of stuff or buy a good bit of gas for $1300. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted March 19, 2011 Super User Posted March 19, 2011 d**n, way to negotiate Robby! What'd the mechanic say? Are you gonna need to replace/repair anything? Quote
CAdeltaLipRipper Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Hahahahaaha you sure you don't want this one? Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 d**n, way to negotiate Robby! What'd the mechanic say? Are you gonna need to replace/repair anything? I need to change transmission fluid and coolant. I also need to get the ac working. the compressor turns on and off fine. They think there is a small leak. I also got 4 tires with mid tread plus a set of bucket seats and a center console. There are some areas with rust too. I am going to wire brush it and spray rust inhibitor. Quote
