Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 8, 2011 Super User Posted March 8, 2011 As much as I want to go out and buy a big rig, I'm glad I primarily fish out of a small boat powered by a couple of trolling motors. My lake is part of my backyard, so I really don't have to go anywhere. Once in a while I'll drive the car over to a larger lake to launch the boat, but thats about a five minute drive. I feel bad for the people with the larger boats that can't afford to take them out right now. Heres to hoping gas prices start to drop. They are going up too fast to drop anytime soon ,,today gas around here went from 3-33 this am to 3-45 at 4 pm Quote
ROCbass Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I fish from a canoe, so it won't effect my local fishing much, but I might not make the 3-4 hour drive weekend trips to my buddies cottage on Black Lake or my grandparents house on Great Sacandaga as often as I have some other years. Of course, last summer I was so busy with work that I didn't make it to either of these lakes anyway. This year it'll just be a different reason I'm not making the trip. Quote
farmpond1 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I'm using the MTD bus more often so that will offset some of the extra expense. It appears more people are doing the same 'cause the bus is usually packed. Quote
BASSINATORBIGJOE Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I like several others on this forum. WILL NOT ALLOW IT TO CUT INTO MY FISHING!!!!Mike 8-) Quote
kayakfisher Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 It wont... I fish from a kayak and haul it with a car that gets 25-30 mpg. I live in an area where there are literally dozens of lakes in a 15 min radius... the only thing hurting my pocketbook is my swimbait shopping spree and getting into musky fishing this year. Quote
dulouz Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 I don't have a boat but was thinking about getting one, just a little jon boat. With the gas prices the way they are I doubt it will happen this year. Maybe I could find a used kayak or canoe. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted March 12, 2011 Super User Posted March 12, 2011 Two weeks ago I made a ninety mile drive, towing the boat, to fish a lake that a couple of "friends" of mine said was great for walleye and Sauger. Both of the guys told me beforehand that they would help pay for the gas. My Suburban is a gas hog and a round trip to that lake burns a half a tank of gas, say fifteen gallons. The fishing was terrible, so we went back the next day. To date, neither of my "friends" have offered me one penny and I'm out about a hundred bucks for the gas, not counting what we used in the boat. Next time out with those two I will ask for twenty bucks a head, before we pull out of town. I don't think it's an unreasonable request. Do you? Quote

Sfritr Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 The house we just bought in Cincy is 2 miles from a lake which happens to be trolling motor only. Not the best lake in the area but the cheapest. Went out for the first time last week and from the time I turned on my truck till the boat got wet was 7 minutes.. Not bad Quote
Fish Chris Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 Well imagine this.... I drive for a living, and gas prices come straight out of my profits. So, while gas goes up $1 per gallon for most of you, It goes up $1 for me + my pay goes down that much more, at the same time ! It is getting hard for me to buy groceries and pay the bills..... asside from trying to put $100 worth of gas in my truck tank ! I might just end up fishing for Stripers and Sturgeon all Spring and Summer ! Sure, I'd like to switch it up and fish for some Green and Brown Bass..... But I'd rather fish for Stripers / Sturgeon, than to not fish AT ALL ! Fish Quote

I'm glad I don't have to use your suburban to tow my boat to KY for the road trip. My 13 - 14 mpg looks pretty good right now, and that's towing one of those bloated, inferior, fiberglass scows. No mention whatsoever of compensation? No, I don't think your request is unreasonable. Gas costs money as does wear and tear on your Suburban. Quote
Intrepid Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 im guessing it might affect a couple trips where i left on friday afternoon/evening and returned on sunday. might be a less of those as i go to Smith Mountain Lake as much as i can each year, but its a 5 hour drive. i love that place, not just for the fishing, its just beautiful there. im so relaxed there and my mind clear. My aunt and uncle have a vacation house there on the lake, but live down the road from me. Whenever possible i ride with them, but sometimes i cant always get off work to go when they leave or i have to be back home before they plan to return, so i drive my own vehicle, which is good on gas. $30 to fill up roughly right now, thats from around a 1/4 tank, i usually never let my needle get below a 1/4 tank. it takes just over half a tank to get there Quote
unageo09 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Shouldn't effect me at all. Our boat only has a 40 hp motor on it and its easy on the gas. We usually get 2-3 sometimes 4 trips out of a tank. I only live about 4 miles from the boat ramp so I don't use much more gas than I usually do. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 16, 2011 Super User Posted March 16, 2011 Being that diesel is about 4.40 a gal..I don't make the longer drives to certain lakes like I did last year.. > Quote
