Seriously what do you do with these things? Are you at war with the Triads? Hunting? I don't get the practicality for guns. I also cant see anyone shooting deer or elk with those.

Yes but what does that have to do with anything?

I'm pro hunting (never been would love to go) pro speed shooting and accuracy competitions (Top shot #1 DVR of 2010 in my house)..i play Call of Duty everyday...so i'm not "one of those people"...but the point I was trying to make was if you are an average Joe, maybe you work at an office or Kinkos or something like that. You have a wife, you have kids just an average run of the mill dude...why do you need so many ridiculous hand guns? Are you in the Mafia? Are you like John Leguizamo in the movie "The Pest" and are constantly being hunted by other people? Do you seriously think that at any moment there will be a gang of people that will storm your house and THANK GOD you have a .45 cal hand gun? It has got to be a mental thing right? You must just like the idea of having that much power in your hand? I would. Seems pretty cool, but not enough for me to run out and arm myself for world war three.

No, but it sure does feel good to have peace of mind. Also guns are pieces of art, instead of having 1000 dollar paintings some choice to buy 1000 dollar guns. to each his own.

I had typed out a long response, but then I realized that it wouldn't change anything.

The simple fact of the matter is the police can't protect you or your family. They can show up afterward, take statements and write a report, but your safety and the safety of your family is YOUR responsibility. Life is not a video game, you only get ONE chance. If you're not prepared, it's game over...and there's no reset button.

And that's all I'm going to say on that subject.

Some people collect baseball cards, some collect fishing equipment, some collect stamps....

Some collect (and shoot) firearms. Between fishing and firearms, I'm dam near broke.

BTW, yes, I will be more than happy with my .45 in hand when any of the scenarios you mention occur.

GMAN's signature seems appropriate here....Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not.

Enjoy the field.

I suppose you have only 1 rod, 1 reel, 1 lure, 1 wrench, etc, etc, etc....

Shoot a few different weapons and then you will probably understand. No 2 guns shoot alike and many of us enjoy shooting. So from a recreational standpoint, several per person could be very practical. Add to that, the different uses for different calibers and styles and you could easily have use for many. Haven't even discussed dedicated SD weapons or collectibles... the list goes on and on.

FWIW, I owned that exact gun along with a Pro CDP. The CDP was a nice little gun, but the Stainless Pro Carry II was the most unreliable piece of crap I've ever owned. Paid $679 for it brand new, and sunk another $700+ into it trying to make it reliable enough to actually carry. Didn't help. I wound up trading it for a heavily worked Sig P239 SAS, and never looked back.

I'd buy another 1911, but definitely not a Kimber. If I was in the market for another one, I'd be looking for another Dan Wesson.

A polished turd...

Too bad.  It's a nice gun.

I certainly don't doubt that you've had problems.  I do think happy owners are way under represented on the internet, though.  I've never known anyone personally with an unreliable Kimber.  In fact, the only problem I've ever actually seen was the feed-ramp issue I wrote about earlier.   But the gun was relaible.

Honestly I think the key to my 1911's are using Wilson combat magazines. They are expensive, but I've never had a problem with any of my Kimber's, Springfield's or Colts! If you haven't used them, check them out!

RW, If you are looking for a compact 1911, the Springfield EMP is a wonderfully shooting firearm, and like all Springfields, they come with an UNLIMITED LIFETIME warranty with free overnight shipping to-and-fro if there is ever ANY problem with the firearm. Peace of mind is priceless. If you want to know if a company stands behind it's product, look at its warranty, that will tell you most everything that you would want to know.

That Smith and Wesson is a sweet gun. Smith 1911s have stellar reputations.

Micro,

I enjoy shooting the Smith and Wesson, but in my opinion there are better guns for the price, and better guns for less price. The trigger has a light pull, but there is a lot of creep, it doesnt break clean, and there is some over travel. Much like the prior 1911's by S&W, the trigger still has TONS of movement and play. The barrel bushing is fit loosely and the lockup isn't exactly tight. Slide to frame fit is decent but not snug, and the grip panels have no grip. However, the scaled slide serrations are wonderful and work very well. The gun allows for quick target aquisition, and the recoil is manageble. The groupings are decent with factory ammo and it feeds SWC's without hiccup which doesnt happen often with factory 1911's. Overall, its a very polished pistol, but its a little sloppier than I like with the trigger and barrel lockup.

Do I see a Les Baer in there? Les Baers are great. I don't own one, but two of my shooting buddies do. One of my buddies availed himself of Les Baer's offer to hard chrome a newly purchased Baer 1911 for $200. It turned out super. I've begged him to sell it to me but he won't budge on it.

Yes indeed, that was my Premier II which I sold to fund a Baer Heavy Monolith in 9mm. Baer makes a great gun. I guess I should have posted a list of what they are:

Springfield Custom Shop TGO-1, Rock River Arms Limited Match 38 Super, 62 Colt National Match, Colt Bright Stainless 38 Super, Baer Premier II, Rock river Basic Limited Match, Kimber CDP II Compact, 52 Colt Lightweight Commander.
