So my university bass club has been debating whether we should create a new logo. I threw this together over the weekend with some of my free time, and would like some critique on how I can maybe make it better.

All constructive criticism is welcome!

Also, I created the bass from scratch in Photoshop with a stock image of a bass as the guide/comparison. Based on my limited knowledge of copyright laws, there shouldn't be any copyright issues as far as this one goes. Lawyers are welcome to speak up though!

Different color on the top half of the bass would maybe be a better color scheme than the orange which almost camouflages the bass. JMHO

see that white border that you used behind the black layers to make it stand out? use another one to outlline the left side of the mouth. i think that might improve it by making it more visible

That's kinda what I was thinking, a white border on the left side of the mouth and a blue border where the white line is between the dorsal fin and the "I". Other than that, I think it's pretty great.

I'm really not liking the orange on the top of the fish. Too much contrast between that and the blue.  I'm having trouble figuring out what the "shape" is.  Of course, I know its a bass, but others may not. I would like to see the bass darker against the orange "I" and the background around the "I" eliminated.  Just my $.02.

i thought it looked great the first time but the second one looks awesome

I been hearing this a lot. My dilemma is that orange and blue are our school colors, so those colors are pretty much the ones I'm stuck working with. Also, we may be putting these either on t-shirts or jerseys, which means that we have an incentive to use as few colors as possible since it leads to faster turnaround time and possibly lower costs.

Just make the fish blue, black and white, superimpose it against the Orange I, but cut the whole logo out, around the I and the fish and eliminate the blue box. You are still using all the colors.  If you were going to put the logo on a shirt, for instance, you would not want to put the box on it.  Think of any logo such as is on a baseball cap.  They are not in boxes, they are "cut out" so to speak.

Dan and Bird Dog, do you guys mean something along the lines of this?

i like this one the best, i think it looks great. but i would suggest adding one or two more markings on the lateral line of the bass.

@mobybass, i don't think the blue box is actually part of the logo, i think it is just there to represent the color of the jerseys/hats/whatever the logo will be printed on. i could be wrong

Yes! This second one is awesome!

you definitely lose some of the fish being navy blue with the background. Maybe try more white and orange in the fish, or white and black. Or the orange "I" blue backgroung and the fish all white with black outlines. The arrangement of the logo is good

The second one looks nice. Good work.

Thanks for all the input guys! Our University bass club has decided to go with it as our club logo for our Jerseys.

Looks good...I was going to suggest that you move the fish behind the I ...almost like it was using the I as cover to ambush its prey..
