We've had our red nosed pitbull for 13 years. Great family dog, extremely intelligent.

Just like anything else, in the right hands, not a problem. Pits are very smart, loving dogs. :)

pit bulls account for the vast majority of the claims I handle involving dog bites.

Hence the stigma.

I Googled that law I was talking about in my previous post and it was rejected. They also wanted pitbull owners to have a minimal of $50,000 liability insurance....

44% of the traffic fatalities in SC involve alcohol. With your logic we should ban the sale of alcohol in SC?

That wouldn't go over too well with residents ;)

Ummm....my logic? I was just pointing out that they get the stigma from facts and studies like Micro mentioned.

Although I love dogs and agree that owners should be responsible for their pets I do think the pit bulls should be a banned.

Pit bulls were bred to be fighting/killing dogs.Fighting to a Pit bull is like swimming to a Labrador retriever, they don't have to be taught how to do it, its in their nature.

German Shepherds and Rottweilers are totally different. They are bred to protect their owners or herds, Yes they can be dangerous to other people but their guard dogs not fighting dogs.

Captain Obvious

By that statement I would have to say you don't actually know how many breeds were breed to fight.

Statements like yours is why people think one particular dog should be banned (lack of knowledge). You can't ban one dog for a bunch of idiot owners and I'm not saying its always the owners fault sometimes a dog ANY dog can snap but then again so can humans maybe they should be banned or better yet only certain humans should be allowed to procreate.

I think by this logic, we should ban certain types of alcohol that are responsible for a statistically inordinate amount of problems. And we did pretty much did... remember 4 Loko? The gubmint made the manufacturers take out the caffeine, so they're no longer true 4 Loko.

Not a bad idea. Been to Walmart lately?

I'd be interested to hear the stats on the percentages of ownership though

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm....................................

I really love dogs of almost every breed. I've even met a lot of really freindly pit bulls. They certainly do have the physical properties needed, to be extremely dangerous / deadly. But yes, it is almost always the fault of a clueless owner, when they attack people.

Ban them ? Geeez, for being one of the most opinionated guys on this forum (anybody disagree ? ;)  LOL) I am really not sure.

I know their are a lot of really sweet, freindly pit bulls.... But I bet if a pit bull had just about killed your wife (like the member earlier in this thread) or maybe say, had ripped your two your old childs throat out, you might feel a little differently, huh ?

Oh, and remember when I said, I like "just about every breed of dog" ? Okay, I'll tell you one that I really can't stand.... (and I'm sorry if you own one... hope you don't have it around kids) and IMPO is a lot more likely than a Pit Bull, to just snap, out of the blue, and do serious damage to anybody, or any other animal around it > A freaking Chow ! And on top of being unpredictable, they look like a big furry piece of $#!+ too !

So again, not sure about banning pits.... but if your going to ban pits, please start with Chows !

Peace,

Fish

I don't want to sound insensitive because I can sympathise with any tragedy. That being said I'm sure anyone In a horrible accident feels differently towards that particular thing. All that said you can not blame a whole race, or group, or breed, etc for the one. Things have to be taken on a case by case basis and almost never categorized.

MMan16, true, true.....

Like I say, I've met a lot of really freindly pit bulls. However, as it has been pointed out, they have been bred for fighting, just like labs have been bred for swimming.

I have to believe that "even" a properly raised pit bull, could potentially snap for no obvious reason, and do harm to strangers, or even their owners. Granted, I think this is rare....

But it's obviously a bigger problem than say, your pomeranian snapping, at which point you could simply drop kick him to the other side of the street ;)

CanalStalkin, I was (and kind of still am) so waiting for somebody to tell me, "Your crazy ! We love our Chow ! He's really freindly ! Yada, yada.....

But hey, I've only known a few people that owned them.... and out of those few, two of them attacked family members, and other family pets, and were taken to the shelter to be put down.

Ban Chows !

As for Pit Bulls.......

My room mate suggested that they should ban "stupid people" from owning Pit Bulls ;) Seriously though.... prior convictions... you can't own a Pit. You live in a ghetto... you can't own a Pit. You wear your pants half way down your ar$e, you can't own a pit (because if it got away, they could never run fast enough like that, to catch it :)

Peace,

Fish

I have a 14 year old granddaughter that will agree with that.  Even if the emotional scars were to heal, she'll always be reminded of her encounter when she wears shorts or a swimsuit.

I'd mention how much she stands to get from her settlement when she turns 21, but I'm afraid half of team pampers would be asking me for her address!

My boss owned a Pit Bull for almost 14 years. I played with it a lot and never felt any kind of fear - just a great, lovable dog - and always had been.....

.......until the day it decided to try to bite his kid's face off.

It could have ended far worse, but he was right there when it happened and was able to tackle the dog. It killed him to put him down. That's the only time I've ever seen him cry.

That brings up a good point, if you do own a dog, you're going to be on the hook for a lawsuit if it attacks/mauls someone.

I was raised around both breeds. Domestic and the fighters. I never owned nor would I attend to train it to fight. My brother's pit he foolishly trained his to fight so anytime you grab her by the collar she attacks my dog. other than that they got along. I even been bite by his dog not intentional but when and if my brother's get into a physical fist fight the dog would grab us by the leg and pull which one of us she has off. As soon as were separated she lets go and stops. I have a scar on my leg from her. I think my brother John does too. Unfortunately cause of our younger brother miss treatment she was later force to be put to sleep cause of the same kind of scenario at his dad's place when he moved there. All she was doing was trying to break a fight, cause she does let go and stop after your separated. Only downfall I have about them is they're hyper dogs and those tails of theirs. They very passionate dogs and will literally cry for the owners if they leave.

Only problem we got around the place I'm out now is this chow here. It will attack my nieces little dog. But doesn't my moms or our poodle when we had her. But for my niece's dog that chow has left some nasty deep gashes in her.

There have been many dogs that have fighting in there bloodlines and I think people think its just pitbulls. Many various dogs fought in the rings against other animals any bulldog has it in there blood. They were used to fight there funny under bite was a characteristic that was encouraged because it helped them hold on.

My parents rescued a Chow when I was little never had a problem he was  a good  dog. I have heard stories but that doesn't mean the breed is bad. I have owned Amstaffs, Bulldogs, and the rescued Chow never had a problem. I guess if you listen to stories I got lucky.

Most of these jokers with "pits" dont even own REAL APBTs. They are crossbread retards. Dogs from lines like "Razors edge" are so stupid looking! And its not a pit!

What most people think of when they hear pitbull.

I agree to a point. The top dog is indeed an American Pitbull Terrier. The bottom one is a American Staffordshire Terrier, or Amstaff.

I thought it would be more then 250 pit's put down a month. A other factor is careless breeding and impulse buying. Family has a dog and think it's a good idea to get a female dog so they can have cute adorable puppies. Dog gives birth to 6 pups, and give em away for free to unknown families. Turns out they weren't really dog people and get rid of them at the shelters.

I understand why needing licensing to own dogs is a bad idea. But the dog breeders should pressure spay and neutering to buyers to stop careless breedings.

I 've owned dogs since I was one year old, been a dog fancier all my life, I 've owned, bred and shown dogs for nearly a decade, I 'm a veterinarian, been practicing for more than 20 years, I agree, there will be in any breed some bad apples just like with people, ask me how many times I 've been bit by a Pit, a dobie, a rottie in those 20 years ? ---> 0, ask me how many times I 've been bit by poodles, cockers, chihuahuas ? ---> so many times that I can 't remember.

Heck one of the worst bites I 've had was given to me by a Shi Tzu which to make it worse, was my own dog, man, that lil sucker really had bad temper.
