OHIO Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 A 2 year old could hit someone with buckshot, not a 9mm. I would choose a shotgun anyday. A shotgun does give a little more margin of error, but this idea that you can just point in the general direction with a shot gun is dangerous. Most home invasion, self defense shooting happens up close. Load your shotgun with 00 buck shot and see what the patten is at 6-10'. I have an 18.5" open cylinder bbl on my Mossberg, and even at close range in a panic situation hitting a target is not sure thing. I see what you mean. It's not a sure thing, but you have a better chance of hitting them with the shotgun. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted February 9, 2011 Super User Posted February 9, 2011 I think a shotgun gives an untrained/practiced person a little better chance, and I did not mean to come across as dogmatic as I did. I apologize for my lack of tact. I just hear all the time that a shotgun is the only way to go, or just point it into the room and you can clear the entire room. My FIL told me this, and he fought in Korea and grew up around guns. : I have my Mossberg in the closet ready to go, but the first thing I will grab if someone is in my house will be a .357 revolver loaded with .38+P hollow points. It is what I've practiced with most, and the most confident with at very close range. If someone is messing around on my property the shotgun will be my first choice. Whatever you choose practice is the key. 8-) Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 9, 2011 Super User Posted February 9, 2011 looks like an H&R topper.for defense i would choose a pump or semi auto For defense I would and do choose a pistol. A shotgun looks good but is way to cumbersome and unwieldy to use for defense. It's perfect for home defense though. Biggest plus, IMO, is that if you miss and your shot enters a wall the person sleeping on the other side of that wall is alot more likely to walk away.A shotgun blast at self-defense range is also MUCH more powerful than a single projectile as well. With multiple projectiles spreading out in a pattern, you are also more likely to hit your target in a stressful situation. Many (if not most) may not be able to control a pistol in that situation. Make sure you are using the right load for home defense, bubba. As for lots of little projectiles flying around, I guess you need to decide what you want to do...stop the threat or tick them off so they leave. Bottom line, people need to decide what they want to do and what is best for their home defense and then research appropriate ammo and become proficient with the firearm, including but not limited to an attack/defense plan, weapon proficiency, stress shooting, tactical movements, and escape planning. Sure, I spend my weekends practicing tactical movements. ;D Quote

tipptruck1 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I saw some thing for you guys debating what rounds for home. It was on outdoor network at like 2 am. They shoot the main loads people use for home defense in to a walls built to code. They stacked walls about 10ft apart to see how many walls it would take to stop the round. They used 223, 38, 45, 9mm, 00 buckshot and bird shot. The one that got my attention was the bird shot. Even at the closest distance from the wall only one or two bbs went through the first wall. If I had a wife and kids bird shot will be in the gun. But when I get my own place it will be 00 buckshot. Quote
Super User Micro Posted February 10, 2011 Super User Posted February 10, 2011 If the barrel on that gun isn't at least 18 inches, and the overall length at least 26 inches, and you didn't pay the $200 fee to the BATF before you acquired or modified it, you are breaking law established by the National Firearms Act with a penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison. BadKarma42 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Consider #4 buckshot to #4 birdshot. Consider avoiding anything too heavey or too powerful that may overpenetrate walls (depending on what your walls are constructed from). Quote
