crypticstatic Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Do you guys still use lead weights? I'm tempted to use Tungsten weights but is the cost worth it to replace my old lead weights? Are there any pros and/or Cons to using the Tungsten weights? Thanks. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted July 22, 2008 Super User Posted July 22, 2008 Tungsten only. The weights are smaller and more uniform as to weight. I hate paying $5.00 for two weights or $5.00 for four of another weight, but that's the way it goes. Quote
SimonSays Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 I think it's worth it, I've heard that lead weights can be off by alot. For cheaper tungsten try ebay. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 22, 2008 Super User Posted July 22, 2008 smaller profile and safer to handle. Quote
HopelesslyAddicted Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Worth every penny. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZchrisf6885 Quote
Big-O Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 I like tungsten as well but I'm not sure it really makes the difference because I haven't noticed an improved strike ratio over lead. Big O Quote

Uncle Leo Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Tungsten, I found it improved my sensitivity and has aloowed me to feel the bottom. It also improved my hook-up ratio as I felt bites which I normally would not feel. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 22, 2008 Super User Posted July 22, 2008 Do you guys still use lead weights? Yup, I still do, got nuff lead weights to poison planet earth 2 or 3 times over and I 'm not going to change until I 'm out of them. Doesn 't mean that for certain applications I don 't use other sinker material like tungsten, brass or stainless steel but my main sinker material is lead. Quote

I have abut 200 lbs of lead left before I make any switches. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted July 22, 2008 Super User Posted July 22, 2008 No more lead weights in my box. I went to Ultra Steel weights for all my T-rigging. I started using the steel weights because I got tired of throwing away all my lead sinkers every year due to the eyes being pinched shut from banging about in the box. The steel weights never get deformed, and have never done any damage to my line. I still have some lead split shot. I've started using tin shot, and will probably stay with that unless something better comes along. I've stopped buying lead shot. Dinsmore makes a coated tin split shot, designed for fly fishing, that looks interesting. I haven't tried those yet. Still have a ton of leadhead jigs. I've tried a few tungsten weights, and do not see anything at all about them that even comes close to justifying the price. The use of lead is banned in some places now. I don't see that doing anything but becoming more widespread. We'd all better find something else we like, and start getting used to it. Cheers, GK Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted July 22, 2008 Super User Posted July 22, 2008 i use STONEZ Then you must be stonze Quote
CRFisher Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 Will Stonze work with my banjo minnow or are combined too heavy for my pocket fisherman to cast properly? I think lead will be outlawed almost everywhere soon. Have to start buying brass or tungsten just to fish someplaces already. It's probably best to start weeding out the lead so you're not caught with a bunch of leftover lead. Quote
warmer Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 flipping = tungstion. texas rigged casting = lead. carolina rig = tungston. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 23, 2008 Super User Posted July 23, 2008 Lead but I was given some Tungsten weights recently by a Tackle Shop & it aint half bad. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 23, 2008 Super User Posted July 23, 2008 It is hard to pay those tungsten prices when you fish a rocky river that claims a lot of baits! Now I have started using more of the steel weights because of the sound they make hitting those rocks. It may attact them (my theory) but I have started catching more fish on the drop shot after switching to them. Allen Quote
