I already have job working for some good people but, BPS has finally contacted me and wants me to do a interview to work in fishing. I have been trying to get this job for along time and am also very surprised that they want me still 2 months shy of my 18th birthday. The benefits are better, the money is better, and there is more hours. The only problem is tho, my schedule changes constantly and the job I'm at right now has been letting me work around that which has been good. I don't think BPS will be as accomodating.

It is not like I don't want to work, it is that I'm a Junior in highschool I have ACT prep going on, I have stuff my mom has me signed up for and thats already been paid for, and countless other things that I don't want to do that I have to do.

I'd rather just do school/study, work and throw fishing in the mix when I can instead having to work around what my parents have me signed up for. It makes it where no one else will want to hire me.

Tell them you limitations, and provide your availability.  If they hire you, then so be it.  That is the same at any job, at any age.

What he said.  :)

Don't think that a big company won't be accommodating.  When I was in college I worked for J.C. Penney.  They were more than willing to work around my ever-changing class schedules.

So go for it!

I thought most companies hire you based on availibility?

Not necessarily, if you consider it a good company they will be accommodating especially in your situation.

When I hired employees, I looked at availability, personal appearance, communication skills, skill set, and intangibles, like whether I felt they'd be a good fit with the team.  I wasn't always looking for a leader, and I wasn't always looking for a grunt.  Yeah, if I needed to fill two weekend shifts, and you couldn't come in, you weren't getting the job.  its seldom as cut and dry as that, though.

It's very acceptable to ask questions during your interview.  In fact, it shows your interviewer that you're not only interested, but that you've given things some thought beforehand.

Example: "I may have some time commitments for school and extra-curricular activities this year.  Will it be possible for me to work around those commitments with my manager?"

Take every bit of the great advice you've gotten from these guys so far, and at least make the time to go to the interview.  Like it has been said before, see if they can work you in with your prior commitments.

Your statement: "I have been trying to get this job for a long time."

If you don't at least show up, I'll bet you will be spending the next year or so asking yourself what-if.  So if for no other reason than peace of mind, go for it.

A large part of my job is helping people find jobs - I always tell my clients - changing jobs is much easier than changing wifes or husbands - you got to get the job first and then decide if it will work for you.

PS, it easier to get a job - if you've got a job.

Bass Pro.

You'd be crazy not to.

Good advice all around, talk to them straight up, if you can manage to work out an arrangement, go for it. Either way talk to them. If you can't agree on the hours, some day down the road things may change for you or them. Good luck  :)

Yup ~ explain your situation and your schedule/availability.

YOUR schedule just may be exactly what THEY are looking to fill !

Good Luck
