Nibbles Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 To be fair, the kids today and kids back then are not of the same animal. Also, Ritalin does not turn you into a zombie. It may stunt growth, but if anything it gives you a mild case of OCD. Here's a list of far more likely scenarios in 2010: Scenario 1: Jack breaks into his dad's gun cabinet, and brings a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun to school. He shows it off to a few friends, believing it will make him look bad-***. 2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to juvenile detention and is forced to see a psychiatrist for several months to determine how crazy he is and which happy pills (probably benzodiazepines) he has to take to stay chill. Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school. A teacher tries to stop the fight and is slugged in the face. 2010 - Police called -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it. Both kids are uncooperative with the officers and have to be physically restrained by several officers. The parents then sue the police department for unnecessary roughness and police brutality, citing bruises on the boys. While the lawsuit is likely to get thrown out, it stirs up a community-wide @#$!-storm and someone in the police department eventually becomes a scapegoat and is forced to resign. Scenario 3: Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students. The school notifies his parents and asks for their cooperation. The parents either ignore the school or tell them that it's the school's job to teach Jeffery to not be disruptive. 2010 - Jeffrey is tested for ADD by the school psychiatirst, and is diagnosed with it. He begins to take a prescribed dose of either Ritalin, Vyvanse or Aderall. Scenario 4: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and the neighbors throw a hissy fit and presses charges. 2010 - Billy is forced to do a set amount of hours of community service. Furthermore, this will be a permanent black mark on his record and will impact his success in the future. Scenario 5: Mark breaks his leg and is prescribed Percocet/Vicodin by his doctor to deal with the pain. 2010 - Mark realizes that he can "get high" by taking more than the recommended dosage of the opiate, and brings some to school to sell to his friends so he can make some extra money and "look cool" at the same time. Mark is caught, the police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons. Scenario 6: Pedro fails high school English. 2010 - Pedro drops out of high school and begins living on government assistance. Scenario 7: Johnny learns from the internet how to make fertilizer bombs from household materials such as Drano and assorted nitrates. He sets one off in his backyard and ends up losing some body part such as a limb or an eye. 2010 - His parents sue the manufacturers of various household items for negligence in making their products tamper-proof. Gets away with a huge lump of cash in the settlement. Coincidentally, Johnny's parents didn't notice anything odd about their son suddenly developing an interest in mixing various household cleaners and assortments of gardening products together in the garage while wearing a surgical mask. No one questions them for negligence. Scenario 8: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. 2010 - Johnny's parents sue the school for negligence and demand damages for pain and suffering. The school takes down the playground because it is deemed hazardous. The school is then forced to make budget cuts and let qualified educators go and resort to lower quality teaching materials in order to pay for attorney fees and the settlement. Quote
