rocknfish9001 Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 What is your go to lure when you are skipping docks all day? I would probably be throwing a 3/8th oz. evolution jig with a chigger craw trailer. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 13, 2008 Super User Posted July 13, 2008 Rock, Plastics and Senkos. Rig either Texas or Wacky rig. And don't for get the "skip" your bait under the docks. By skipping the bait under the docks and piers you can get way back under them for the bass who are resting in the shade and cooler water. When you get bit, remember where. For instance, was it in the rear right hand corner next to the shore? Or out front by the ladder? Or under the dock as you skipped the bait in the middle? Chances are that the other docks and piers will be holding fish in the same area. Jigs and pigs are good, but please have a finesse worm and a Senko ready to go. One guy I know throws a Shaky Head under and around docks. I have thrown a Split-Shot rig. So just about anything goes. The fish will tell you want they want and once you discover the pattern you are in fish heaven. Have fun and don't be concerned about getting out of the boat to retrieve your baits when they get hungup on the boat docks and piers. Or hitting the boat docks and piers with your baits when you skip them. That's part of the fun fishing docks and piers. Quote
MaxDal Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 If you're looking for baits that skip especially well give those a try : Live Magic Shad (or javallon alike) Flippin' Tubes Deps deathadder (perfect as jig trailer) Fat Ika Senko (and alike) Of course, with some exercice you can skip pretty much everything. But there's a simple rule..... the straighter the bait, the better it skips. Avoid softbaits that have too many appendages..... Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 The first lure I try nowadays is a rage tail craw on some sort of rigging or another. Other favorites are rage tail shads, ***, trick sticks, flukes, and crankbaits. Quote
LAbail Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Senkos are great for skipping only sometimes Since they are delicate and all They will rip while skipping. Paca craws are great for doing this. I get alot of dock bites that way and I will sometimes put a shakeyhead on the Paca craw and that works as well. Also what Sam said about the location on the dock you caught the fish is a great thing to remember. Quote
bassdocktor Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Usually some type of black and blue jig or tube when pitching with various trailers. Probably a Strike King or one of the new jigs released by the original owner of Shuberts Lures (Rite Bite). I'll often use my flipping jig for skipping or some type of worm or senko. Really depends how I'm fishing that day. If I'm passing the docks inbetween pad fields I'll just keep pitching the jig or if I've been working the worm/senko that'll get skipped some. Quote
brgbassmaster Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 black and blue either flw outdoor jigs or manns stone jigs. with a strike king 3x trailer. won a tournament using those and been a go to dock skipper ever since. Quote
bassgeneral Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 senkos, senkos and senkos 3 4 and 5 inch on spinning tackle 6 lb flouro just came in 9th place on a b.a.s.s tourny as a nonboater using them. Quote
Ifish4keeps Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 i've caught my biggest bass (7 pounder) skipping a 3/8 oz kvd shakey head jig with a zoom shakey head worm on it, but i also like jigs and senkos under docks Quote
naturalnbama Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Fat Ika rigged Tex backwards and weightless is the best bait for skipping docks hands down. when you rig it hook through the skirt the plain fat end goes first and its shape and weight just make it perfect for skipping and pitching. PLUS when rigged this way it actually runs away from you after it hits the water which makes it deadly under a dock or overhanging tree limb. slow fall with a swaying motion that fish cant resist and wont spit. Tokyo Tony Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 The best skipping bait I've found, in terms of ease and accuracy of skipping, is the Yamamoto Kreature. It has a very consistent skipping action so you can guage the distance really well, not to mention it's fish-catching ability. I've been meaning to try skipping docks with plastic toads, but haven't gotten around to it yet... Quote
basspimple Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 usually i use a trick stick, senkos just cant take the punishment being dished out while skippin em hard, imo. matched with a m/h spinning rod, 4/0 offset shank hook, and any where from 8, 10, or 12 lb test mono, i generaly get good hook sets, shock absorbtion and abrasion resistance to get even the biggest fish out n' about. also, another bait that is good for skippin, and works really well for agressive fish(at least for me) is a 1/4 oz. rattle trap. its somthin dock fish never (or very rarely) seen before. works great! -j Quote
kbkindle Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 yamamota kreature baits with a 3/0 gamai ewg red hook pumpkin with blk flake has been working for the past week here on my home lakes weightless kb Quote
