Why don't these guys handles old documents and such with gloves? :-?

I'm curious how much they rake in a month.

Notice how the owner has a "buddy" that specializes in almost every single item that gets brought in?

Tin is absolutely correct about wearing gloves for many of the items that come across their counters.  IMO many of the items coming into their shop are staged events, the normal pawn items like jewelry, watches, guns, golf clubs etc don't have audience appeal for television.

I have a few acquaintances back in Detroit in the pawn business, some do exceptionally well, most are 2nd or 3rd generation.

In Florida I see pawn shops almost on every corner so to speak, Florida is unique compared to some areas as many " wealthy" people move here and no longer are " wealthy ", lots of expensive cars, furs and jewelry being pawned.  Hot item is gold, it's a cash business, me being in the scrap business I bought gold for 35 years.

i hate those guys so much.

Oh yeah? I kinda like the show.

The show is ok, but they aren't nearly as awesome as they think they are.

It's way better than "American Pickers".

You got that right! Who's idea was it to make a show about dumpster divers?

It's a tv show.  Of course much of it is staged, just like American Choppers, or Monster Garage.

But, the guys in the business better know their stuff, or know folks with expertise in all areas.  It's impossible for them to be experts in the many varieties of memorabilia.  Sans this knowlege they'll go broke in a hurry.

The items they have on the show are as important as the characters of the show.  Who would be interested in watching someone pawn their Timex watch, or their five year old shotgun, rifle, or whatever.

I also enjoy "Pickers", primarily because I like rummaging around in old barns and sheds out of sheer curiosity.

I'm into Ax Men as well.  Don't care too much about Browning, Rhyguard, Pihl, or the big operations.  I like the characters operating in the swamps, looking for submerged logs.

Deadliest Catch has probably spawned most of these reality shows.  I suspect most of us know characters like those we see on the tv screen.

Because the vast majority of these reality shows seem staged I have zero interest in them. My wife loves Ghost Hunters. I roll my eyes at that one. They are so lame.

I will say that they are fair at least to a customer.  One episode had a lady trying to sell a piece of jewelry for about $200 i think when it was worth something like 12k.   They had it appraised and gave her a fair deal.

Storage Wars is the new one that I am getting a kick out of.

Man, I love "Pawn Stars"...."You never know what's gonna come through that door..." If I had a buddy who was an expert on antique door knockers, I would open my own pawn shop. Cable guy is here right now. Kicking out Fios for predatory billing. My only question to the cable installer was "am I still gonna get Pawn Stars"? Yeah baby!! :D

Pawn stars is a decent show. Theres another one out now, I think "hardcore pawn" or something like that, on the other hand...

The only episode i saw the jake the snake looking character agrees to a deal on an item, shakes hands and the guy goes to the payment window. At this point one of the guys looks it up on the PC and figures they over paid. Jake the snake then walks out and says he no longer will pay the agreed amount. Really shady, I felt like taking a shower after watching 15 minutes of it.

Man, you don't get around much.  Come on up to southern New England, particularly Massachusetts, RI, and eastern Conn.

We pronounce porn and pawn the same.  The New England accent is to drop a lot of the Rs in words.  Ever seen the scene at the beginning of JAWs where Roy Scheider who hails from New York in the movie mocks the Yankee accent.  Pahk the cah in the yahd.

Born, corn, horn, morn, porn, torn and worn are pronounced like dawn, fawn, lawn, and yawn.

It's perfect.

It's like American Chopper, without the gay motorcycles.

Personally, I like American Pickers. Then again, I used to dumpster dive at Brown University.

I like Pawn Stars, they get some weird stuff on that show...like the baby gas mask.  It's getting kinda annoying now that they are doing dream sequences and such....chumlee's wine was funny.  AP is ok, don't care much for mike or frank's personalities.  There are a few auction shows that are ok too...I think one of them is Hollywood Treasure where they deal with movie memorabilia....that ones neat.
