I'm somewhat surprised this thread hasn't been started yet, especially with the insomnia crew.

Traditionally, in our family, turkey is for Thanksgiving and a spiral cut honey baked ham for Christmas. Sometimes both, but generally just one.

If it was solely up to me though, I'd much rather have ham as the main course for both holidays, and turkey for leftover sandwiches.

Man, it's hard to top a leftover turkey sandwich with extra mayonnaise and pepper.

As for side dishes, well, the list is too big. But, if I had to pick three, then it would be broccoli casserole, pineapple casserole and sweet potato with raisins and melted marshmallows on top.

There's loads of ham at my parents' house, which I'll be bringing home here soon. There is potato salad, cranberry salad, waldorf salad...........um, that's about it. I ate the rest. ;D

My wife tries to plan it so that even if there are leftovers, it's very little. She's pretty good at that too. Mom and Dad though, they bought an outrageously large ham and it was barely cut on cause my brother brought 3 kinds of chicken he made (buffalo, Jack Daniels barbeque, and ranch) and it upstaged the ham very badly. Also, there was a whole coconut cream pie that wasn't even touched. Just remembered that, I'm gonna have to go get some of it. :D

There was also a whole casserole dish full of what we call "beer weenies" that are cooked in beer and tabasco sauce. Very hot!! They disappeared in a day though. Boy do they burn comin' out!! :o

Let's see ...

This morning I made biscuits and gravy.  Substituted the sausage with ham.  Not sure if I invented that, but I am claiming it.  It's the bomb.

For lunch some gourmet sandwich my sister made.  Not sure exactly what is was, but it had fondue cheese on/in it.  Delicious.

For dinner ... Ham and cheese soup.

We have several pounds of baked chicken left over that we de-boned and put in gallon ziploc bags. We just finished some that I simmered in a covered skillet with barbecue sauce and a little water for about 30 minutes. I then removed the lid to cook off the water. Good stuff. 8-)

BB a left over turkey or chicken  sandwich with extra mayo, salt, and pepper is one of life's simple pleasures.

As for real food, leftover ham with special mustard glaze-sauce on a brown-n-serv roll with a little pepper :) Yumm!

I must be a terrible person, because I hate spiral cut ham.  So much so, that I will start to sing the old commercial song; "My bologna has a first name, it's O.S.C.A.R." as soon as the wife hauls one into the house.  As far as turkey goes, I just got done with that bird four weeks ago.

We have two Christmas parties here at the house.  One on the day before with the entire family, where finger food is the order of the day.  When the kids all go to the in-laws, they can have their traditional meals.  Christmas day is reserved for the two of us and our Mothers.  It has become a tradition that I always cook up a little non-traditional dinner that day.  This year we started with several shrimp and cold crab dishes, and finish off with a smallish sized 5lb prime rib.  Once I got done making "to go packages" for the moms in our lifes, there wasn't much in the way of leftovers.

Not horrible, just terrible.  The horrible part is sitting down to chow down on some poor ham cut into narrow strips and cooked down to the point that it has no moisture, no flavor, and is about as chewy as those pig's ears that you can buy for a dog.

Years ago, there was a packing plant near Detroit called Farmer Pete's , or Peat's (I can't remember how it was spelled) that had fantastic ham.  Since the day they went out of business, I haven't had a really good ham.  I've had a few that were passable, but none of them were spiral cut.

Sorry, but I don't see what's so special about a spiral cut anything.

My father made me hate holidays food, after the party is over I had to eat turkey for a week, he was so generous with the holiday groceries  ::), don 't need a 20 lb turkey to feed 10 persons  ::), add to that all the rest of the food ( lasagna, shrimp, salads ) and we could have fed 3 times as much people.  :o

So since my father is gone I only purchase waht 's needed to feed us the day of the holiday and the next day ( we call it "recalentado" ) and bye bye till next year.

We have always had turkey for Thanksgiving and ham on

Christmas. I like a large variety of side dishes, but stuffing

with gravy is probably my favorite.

Although I like the leftovers for a snack or three...Everything

gets trashed after day two.

Most if not all store bought hams are pre cooked, yet most people re-cook them to death.

One of the best hams I ever had I got in Virginia on the way home from North Carolina. Expensive, but worth every penny. Here's an example:

Oh.  Well If I'm eating a ham thats like you described, I'll pass on it myself.  The hams I have during the holidays are always moist, juicy, and effin delicious.

The wife did this at Thanksgiving and then again just the other day at Christmas.  We took the left over turkey carcass and boiled it down in our slow cooker over night with the left over roughage (carrots, Celery, peppers....etc.)  Then the next morning we picked all the meat off the bones, and saved the broth.  She has a wonderful recipe for home made noodles and she made Turkey and Noodles.  It is delicious.  I am not sure what has gotten into her lately, but she has become Betty Crocker.......and I like it.  Darn good cook and the food is wonderful.
