Super User Root beer Posted December 25, 2010 Super User Posted December 25, 2010 I want this water bottle soooooooo bad: http://adventure-cycling.com/product/cannondale-bunny-water-bottle-38969-1.htm?Variations=&alert=OKalert I don't want it if they're going rip me off by charging 9 bucks for shipping and handling. Anybody in the Chicago area (I think that where this bike shop above is located) would pick this bottle up for me and ship it to me cheaper? I'll reimburse you for the money of course. I'm dead serious too. PM me if you can! Quote
bassdocktor Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 Unless I read it wrong it's not Chicago but PA. Sorry. Quote

Super User Marty Posted December 26, 2010 Super User Posted December 26, 2010 Have you checked with your local bike shops that carry Cannondale bikes? Quote
Super User Root beer Posted December 26, 2010 Author Super User Posted December 26, 2010 The ones that carries Cannondale products are few miles away. Next time I venture into that area I'll check it out. The water bottle is discontinued I believe. Cannondale's website do not have it listed anymore. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted December 26, 2010 Super User Posted December 26, 2010 Buy ten of 'em. It would cost 9 bucks for shipping to Massachusetts. The nine or ten bucks for shipping is not really a rip off. How much profit do you think is in a six dollar item. To think it unreasonable for someone to pack an item, label it, and send it along to charge nine or ten bucks for their trouble, is being unreasonable. It's either that, or you have no idea of how much it costs a company to ship a small item. They might make a few bucks on it, but they are entitled to make a profit on their labor, materials, and supplies used to ship an item. How much do you think they should charge? When you come up with the number, ask yourself this question. Would I pack, label, and drive the product to a UPS, FedEx or post office, pay the shipping costs for that number? I wouldn't do it for ten dollars. Not if I was trying to make a living doing it. Quote
Deb Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 If you wanted it SOOOOOOOOOOOOO badly, you'd have already paid the $9 and it'd be on it's way to you. Merry Christmas Quote

Super User Root beer Posted December 26, 2010 Author Super User Posted December 26, 2010 Beside, it a local bike shop, if they didn't want spend extra time and labor on shipping items, they wouldn't be advertising to ship items. Just another way to increase profit margin by adding extra to shipping cost. I ordered a bike jersey not long ago, and it was shipping from California for $6.95 and had to weight more than the water bottle since I also ordered another item to go with it..... It don't cost them that much. Quote
preach4bass Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Just another way to increase profit margin Well, they are in business to make a profit. You're just getting no sympathy are you? ;D Quote

You're just getting no sympathy are you? ;D I don't mind paying shipping and handling, but 9 bucks when there are cheaper and faster alternative? Come on. I think in decimals and dollars. I ride bikes with the guy that owns the bike shop where I purchased my extremely expensive mountain bike from..I know the mark-up and the profit he made off of it...It not that high. If they want charge 9 bucks for shipping that small of an item when you can do it cheaper, that fine by me, but it won't be mine money. Oh well. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted December 26, 2010 Author Super User Posted December 26, 2010 Put it this way, I doubt a company of that size use ABC costing concept. I also doubt they ship that much item online since I only found them because I Google that water bottle. Therefore, I'm betting they have no direct labor in shipping department, no direct material cost in terms of labeling (it's probably expense under "office supply" as a period cost) therefore, the time it takes to print a tiny label stick it on a small box with flat rate is pretty darn fast and cheap....They're either dumb or greedy or both. The total cost by the way was like 15 some dollars, I didn't pay that much for my other two water bottles combine. That also includes taxes. Eh, screw it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 26, 2010 Super User Posted December 26, 2010 Root Beer, Did you check for it on ebay? Did you Google it to see if you can find it somewhere out there? Just suggestions to consider. Happy New Year. Quote

It don't cost them that much. It costs them about five bucks for the shipping charge from the post office. That is only a part of what it costs a company to ship merchandise. Once again, they have to pay someone to pack and label it and they have to pay for the materials to pack it. By the time they are done, if they make a couple of bucks on it they are not robbing you. And I haven't mentioned the bookkeeping involved for their records and tax purposes. You just do not understand, or you don't want to understand. Seems like your request for someone in that area to pick it up, ship it to you and you'd reimburse them for postage shows you have no appreciation for what the task involves. You should have offered to reimburse them for the time they spent to get the item, and the gas they burned running around for you. That plus the five bucks postage would put you well over the ten dollar shipping cost. You get no sympathy is right. Quote

Their employees are general employees. Their wage is being paid whether they are shipping anything or not. They have no direct cost to shipping department. Bookkeeper has nothing do with shipping cost that probably administrative cost which is usually a period cost. It don't cost 9 bucks to ship a water bottle..but they obviously rather just charge the flat rate regardless of the content. I would have done it different. Believe me, I understand. They're just dumb. Screw it. Quote

So you're probably saving money by spending $9 for shipping. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 26, 2010 Super User Posted December 26, 2010 Fishing Rhino is 100% right. If you want it........buy it, that is their company policy, not talking major money here. For a college boy studying economics you don't Jack Sh^^t about business. Quote
Nibbles Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Let's go with your argument that they are general employees and get paid to do whatever is needed, so technically there is no "extra cost" for them to pack up an item and mail it. There's still an opportunity cost, which I assume they decided to factor into the shipping cost. Some businesses do not do this because they believe it will attract more customers. Other businesses, especially local shops with established customer bases, sometimes don't feel the need to attract new customers so much that they would implement customer attraction tactics such as cutting the cost of shipping, so they don't. Their choice really. I don't think there's anything wrong with your initial request. It's a smart attempt to save a few bucks, and I'd do the same if I were you. However, I do think there's something wrong with your expectations for that store. It's their choice how they run their business, and if you don't like it you don't have to become one of their customers. Quote

Your "friend" has to drive to the bike shop, lay the money out for you, then pack it and label the package, take it to the post office or make arrangements to have it picked up, then wait to get reimbursed. I hope when you get into the real world you will look back and see how foolish this is. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted December 26, 2010 Author Super User Posted December 26, 2010 I'll admit I didn't think about the size of Chicago, but that errand would take me about 15 minutes in my town. Quote

There's roughly 8 million people in Chicago proper not to mention the millions of suburban residents that commute in and out on a daily basis and during rush hour it can take 2hrs or more to drive from the far north side to the far south side.
