Looks like I'll be picking one up of these two up at the gun show this weekend. I'm leaning towards the Mossberg 500 Waterfowl (28" vent rib barrell, Mossy Oak duck blind camo, etc. etc.). Any opininons?

What are you going to use this for?

Single purpose, or multi-purpose?

Have you got any other shotguns?

I have owned both those guns but never again.    I guess I am 'Old School'.  I am a Winchester Mod 12 or a older Remington 870 Guy.  I was hunting with a Winchester pump 410 ga @ 6 years old.  Could not hunt my myself until I was 8.   I put many rabbits, Quail, and squirrels on the  supper table with early Winchester and Remington pumps.

Out of those two, I'd get the Remington, but keep your eyes open for a deal on something nicer as well.

You'd be fine with either two.  I grew up shooting a Mossberg 500 that I still have today. It isn't pretty, but I can still knock down a dove/duck/goose with it.

Now that I have my Winchester SX3 though.... :-X

I'll keep the Mossberg in case someone else needs a shotgun.

The thread I made about this awhile back helped me choose the 870.

I'm getting it for Christmas and can not wait to use it.

Since that thread, I have shot a Mossberg and an 870 side by side and I would have to say I like the 870 better.

It is much more comfortable in my hands than the 500 was, but that's just me.

For me, it would be the 870 Express. But then, my first repeating shotgun was a Wingmaster that I bought for $89.95 brand new. I've owned Winchesters, Ithicas, Mossbergs, Brownings and a Savage (yuk), all pumps, and the 870 is the pick of the litter.

My vote would be for the 870.  Been awhile since I carried around a pump though.  I used a S&W super 1000 for years then graduated to Beneli.  The 870 has been around a long time and is a proven gun IMHO.

Personally I'd buy the 500. Don't know if you deer hunt, but Mossberg offers a barrel that will convert the 500 to a muzzleloader. All you have to do is swap barrels and your all set.
