Hook Set Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I've always enjoyed dipping when I fish, obviously we all know the stuff has an odor. I always try and wipe my hands before slipping a soft plastic on the hook. I've read that nicotine have negative effects on bass. So, what do you think, is dipping costing me bites? Maybe I'm being a bit over cautious, but every bite counts on tournament day. By the way, I always use Megastrike or JJ's. Quote
FL Knifemaker Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Costing your bites or causing you bites?? I doubt it has much of an affect either way, especially if you're using scents. I once dropped a can of cherry Skoal from my treestand. It spilled all down the tree and landed on the ground. I had a doe come in right up to the tree and sniff the can!! I'd tie a can over the side on your boat ;D Quote
Hook Set Posted February 25, 2010 Author Posted February 25, 2010 Yep, meant to say "costing" me bites, fixed it. Thanks for your reply. Quote

I don't think dip would put bass off anymore than other things on the boat. I keep a wet towl by my seat to wipe my hand on. After a while it smells like garlic spray so, everything I touch probably smells like that. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 25, 2010 Super User Posted February 25, 2010 some people rub their baits around in copenhagen because they think it is a fish attractant....so I'd say it doesn't matter too much. Quote

swilly78 Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I chew Cope, and the first thing I do when I get out to the lake is drop a pinch in the water.(its a superstition thing) I have many times watched gills try to eat the stuff as it falls. I wouldn't worry. Quote
Super User Tin Posted February 26, 2010 Super User Posted February 26, 2010 It's so odd how many people dip once you get out of New England. Out of all my friends, fishing buddies, club members, ect, I know one person who uses snuff regularly. If you go to a gas station up here they might sell 2 or 3 different brands and flavors. Quote
Hook Set Posted February 26, 2010 Author Posted February 26, 2010 Hey, thanks for the input guys. Quote

It's available around here but I know very few people who use it. All of them are fisherman. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted February 26, 2010 Super User Posted February 26, 2010 Can a day. Don't take any special precautions or use scent. Still catch a fish or two once in awhile. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted February 26, 2010 Super User Posted February 26, 2010 I watched somebody spit dip on a bait and still catch fish.I'm pretty convinced once the bait hits the water it disperse I can't function without it either. Quote
bwell Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I always have one in also when I am fishing or hunting, I cant see it hurting anything.... I have tried Cope a couple times, but that stuff is so fine I just chase it all around my mouth the whole time I have it in, and always end up with half of what I had in when I was done... Skoal works for me... Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 1, 2010 Super User Posted March 1, 2010 I gotta ask because it seems to happen in baseball, and a lot of them chew, or used to. When you chaw, do you get a sudden urge to grab your crotch? Enquiring minds want to know. Quote

Luke at Gouldsboro Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 I don't think it has any effect on the scent of your bait, especially if you are using scent on top of it. I chew mint Skoal Quote
Hook Set Posted March 3, 2010 Author Posted March 3, 2010 Thanks for the reply's my fellow dippers. Maybe I'll quit one day, but until then, I can't imagine fishing without it, I've heard Heroin is easier to give up! Quote

NOVA Angler Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 I cant keep Cope in one spot... I wasnt lying when I said I chase it around my moutht the whole time I have it in... Mint Skoal for me please... Make sure you have long cut Cope. The fine cut is a mess. I gave it up, but I did enjoy it out on the water. The problem is it started every spring with a fishing trip and then next thing you know I'm going through a can every couple days. I could normally get myself to quit by September/October. Having a baby put things in perspective for me so I decided no mas. Quote
Red Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Grizzly Fine Cut Natural for me. I have one in always while fishing, pretty much always when not fishing as well. I haven't noticed any effect on the fishing or anything like that. Cliff Quote
