farmpond1 Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 I used to fly frequently but my arms sure got tired. : Seriously though, unless you're flying with an african or eastern european airline, you're considerably safer on a plane than you are driving to and from the airport. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 8, 2010 Super User Posted November 8, 2010 Mother in law bought flights and hotel stay for 9 days in Maui. Just convinced the wife that we didn't have time to go with the upcoming move to Kansas. Real truth is that I have a massive phobia of flying and I'm not hip on spending 26 hours in the air within one week. Ain't I terrible? Hope your wife doesn't read this. Quote
brushhoggin Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 Statistically speaking safer up there than down here. Professional pilots, air traffic controllers, meteorologists and the rest. Down here amateurs everywhere, on the roads and water. I'm not real crazy on the nickel diming of the airlines to pump up profit, I'd prefer them to raise the price and include everything the way it used to be. I will draw the line when I get charged extra for my wallet, calling it extra carry on luggage. i hate flying as well. this is the thing. people always talk about statistics this and that. thing is with that, if something goes wrong in a car, you can survive an accident. something goes wrong with a plane, its over. my first flight ever I was waiting on my departure and asked a random pilot when the last time a plane just up and fell out of the sky, and he said shortly after 911, a planes tail fell off and all the passengers fell to their death. yes in the US. ??? its like playing russian roulette, the odds are in your favor, but the possibility still exists. airplanes are nothing but controlled explosions. Super User bilgerat Posted November 8, 2010 Super User Posted November 8, 2010 This thread is amazing. I bet half the guys on here would not think a minute about going out deep sea fishing in a 22 ft boat yet you couldn't pay them to fly. Its all because we are fine with the dangers we know and scared of those we don't know That's a good point. I'm a marine diesel mechanic and I've been on some scary vessels in my time. I've even refused to go on a sea trial in some of them, they've been that bad. On the other hand, aircraft are ridiculously OVER maintained and scrutinized. Get the happy pills and take the trip of a lifetime. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted November 9, 2010 Super User Posted November 9, 2010 haven't heard from the OP in a while, Mrs. Tallydude must have found this thread ;D Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted November 9, 2010 Super User Posted November 9, 2010 The best part of flying is the takeoffs and the landings. Other than that, boring. Speaking of drinking to get on a plane, I used to meet up with a bunch of guys from California, and we'd play golf in Arizona or Myrtle Beach for a couple of weeks. A couple of them, my best buddies of the group, would take a limo to the airport, drink in the limo, drink in the lounge at the airport, and board the plane in a stupor. They got thrown off one flight because one of them was too loud, asking in a loud voice if everyone was ready to party. My other buddy who flew a lot, and was reasonably sober, threatened to take his company's business elsewhere if they didn't get to Myrtle Beach on that same day. The airline acquiesed, put them on a non-stop flight, and in first class to boot, where they were served free drinks during the flight. I was to meet them at the airport. I got there a half hour ahead of their scheduled arrival and they were there waiting for me. It seems the non-stop flight arrived an hour before their originally scheduled flight. Quote
SDoolittle Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 You haven't lived until you've experienced a combat landing in a C130. Because of the anti-aircraft threat, they can't do the slow, gradual descent like a commercial airplane. Instead, they come in high and then kinda corkscrew to the ground. It's quite a sight to see a bunch of combat hardened Soldiers screaming and puking and praying to touch down. High speed map of the earth in a blackhawk (crashhawk) will scare the bejesus out of you too. I've spent a considerable amount of time in combat, and I've experienced a lot of heinous stuff, but getting there and back are always the scariest part for me. Quote
TrippyJai Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I'm fine with flying as long as it's not overseas. It really sucks when flights are too long. Having to be stuck in your seat puts me over the edge. I would stay up all night so I'll pass out on the plane... sleep for 8-9 hours... wake up... what?!? ...another 11 hours? *swear* Quote
tallydude Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 I'm enjoying your comments and it turns out the wife hasn't informed her mom of our decision yet- we're still waiting on some Kansas information- I might get stuck with this after all. Quote

B-Dozer Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Try that with a commercial jet. It's like comparing a moped to a Hayabusa. Quote
farmpond1 Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Try that with a commercial jet. It's like comparing a moped to a Hayabusa. My thoughts exactly. Although it would be quite remarkable for a novice to make a safe landing regardless of type, a commercial jet gobbles up considerably more runway than a little Cessna or Archer. To borrow from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, you'd have a better chance at playing pick up sticks with your butt cheeks than landing a Boeing, Lockheed, or Airbus. ;D Quote

Tokyo Tony Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Are you out of your mind tallydude? Just take some pills and/or get drunk and do it. It'll be a great vacation, and it's free. Face your fears, especially the irrational ones. Flying is safer than driving. Do you drive? Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Wow...free trip to Hawaii. I would fly 10 hrs. cramped in the bathroom, while getting a colonoscopy to get a free trip to Hawaii. Went there for my honeymoon and have been dreaming of getting back there ever since. Just do whatever you have to to get through the flight and you will have the time of your life. Quote

Hmmm if my car engine dies, I just get out and walk. Try that with a Jumbo Jet. Quote

Super User 00 mod Posted November 9, 2010 Super User Posted November 9, 2010 If the trip takes longer than 5 hrs by car, Im flying! When its your time to go, its your time to go. No need stressing over it! Its all up to the big man upstairs! Jeff Quote
tallydude Posted November 11, 2010 Author Posted November 11, 2010 Due to a lack of evidence, I'm not following any deities at the moment. However, there's plenty of evidence lately of aircraft failure and/or terrorist activity. Not sure I want to risk leaving my kid to live with the in-laws just so I can go on vacation. It's a risk/benefit equation for me. The risks outweigh the benefits of the trip. Wifey can't get that in her head. She wants to go sit on a beach, but we could do that here in Florida. Looks like I'm going to have to go now, and I HATE THAT. I could not be less interested or excited to go on this trip. Quote

Captain Obvious Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Yeah, but your counting people that drown in a plane when it crashes! lol When I die I plan to go quietly like my grandfather, Not like the people screaming in his car ;D Quote
