I am loving my S&W MP40...

I had to pull it out on a home intruder last year and it got his attention real quick! Luckily I didn't have to use it, ammo isn't cheap! 8-)

Totally with ya BWell. Exactly what I carry. The only difference is mine has the ambidextrous thumb safety. Your right, ammo is NOT cheap.

I love my M&P!

BTW when it comes to CCW you need to look long and hard at 2 things that really make the difference, 1 a good belt (assuming IWB), and a good holster. I looked for a bit before I settled on a Crossbreed Supertuck IWB. Carrying a FS M&P was not exactly comfortable until I got that holster. Now it is a piece of cake.

You can't buy a handgun until you are 21 unless you buy from a private dealer, either way, you have to be 21 to buy handgun ammo.

That wasn't the question.

I wanna get a Glock 19 or a Sig p229 when I'm 18.

I'm sorry, I'm just trying to save you from getting laughed at by the guy at the gun counter on your 18th birthday...

As an FFL employee I was trying to set the record straight on your expectations concerning gun age restrictions.

I know, I should have worded that differently. I really wasn't trying to sound rude hahaha sorry man.

From my understanding, which again, I'm just trying to learn, I can own a handgun, or at least be in possesion of one, if it doesn't leave the house unless to go to a shooting range, show, etc., but I have to have parental consent. I can't buy one either until I'm 21, unless it's a private dealer (18). No CCW unless you're 21 and have a permit.

The reason I'm interested in getting a G19 is that my dad is a sports writer and works really late hours, so a lot of the time he isn't home at night. So, in a sense, I'm the man of the house. It's not that I'm worried that I'm not capable of defending myself and family (mother, brother) without one, because I'm 6'2" 210 haha, but it would just be the extra sense of security. Plus I have this like weird tactical mind so it would be a nice fit. If I got one, I would sit everyone down and explain to them how it works, the operation, etc. Yes, I know that a sports writer is pretty much the sweetest possible job, LOL. He meets so many fricken sweet people.

I have a Glock 17 9mm that I carry on duty. I've got a Glock 22 .40 that I carry off duty sometimes and leave at home when the wife is home by herself. I keep a loaded 12 gauge shotgun in the bedroom that is a much better option for home defense IMO. That's probably heavily influenced from seeing the repercussions of a father trying to ward off an intruder in his home shooting a .357 mag through 2 walls and into his son sleeping in his bedroom. A shotgun blast won't go through many walls and I can't tell you the number of times someone has scared off an intruder just from racking a shell into the chamber, that's a universal sound that everyone understands.

Bingo!!

I explain that to a couple people each day working the gun counter.  Next to no one anticipates rounds going through walls when they inevitably miss an internded target.

I have a Browning Hi-Power Practical 9mm. I love this gun but I'm about to sell it and get two Kel Tec P-3ATs for CCW. One for me and one for my wife.

Check out the Ruger LCP before buying the Keltec for a CCW. I was set on a keltec until a buddy let me shoot the keltec and the LCP side by side. Just a suggestion.

Been considering adding a Keltec to my group. Please let me know what you didn't like about it.

Two of the guys in my hunting club drive for Brinks, so a good CCW is a must. They both own Keltec pistols and they love them.

They are essentially the same gun along with the new Taurus 380.

They are based off the Keltec (original design). The fit and finish of the LCP feels a little nicer, but it seems to have a longer trigger pull, IMO.

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem owning any of the three. There is that little difference to me. These are not designed to be 25yd pistols; more or less "belly guns" for when the poop hits the fan.

While you can shoot them accurately at some distance, that is not their intended use and are designed as such.

Again, all IMO.

The LCP fits my hand nicer(and being a tall guy with bigger hands that helps).

Also as Speedbead said the fit and finish is nicer.

I like the trigger pull of the LCP better, it feels smoother to me even though it may have a longer pull I do not notice when rapid firing, ie a true situation.

The LCP I shot had more rounds through it compared to the Keltec, and the Keltec jammed twice where as the LCP never did in 40 rounds with both.

And as previously mentioned, they are not long range accurate guns, but the LCP grouped better, which played a small difference in my choice.

Both fit well in a pocket unnoticed and I think most people would be happy with either, but shooting them side by side I opted for the LCP for another $30.

I have a Glock 35 which isa tactical 40, holds 15 rounds in the magazine  ;D Also a Sig P228 and for home defense a Remington 870 Express with an 18 inch barrell and the extended barrell underneath to hold more ammo. Gonna get a nice revolver next. After 6 months of searching for homes and 3 contracts that didnt work out, I finally got a brand new construction home on 12 acres in the country. Havent moved in yet but went out there last week and set up some targets. Put a box of ammo thru my glock and had a ball. My best home defense btw is my 4 dogs  :o I dare anyone to even try and get halfway up the 400 foot driveway  ::)

Glock 22 40. Gen3 15+1, I use this as a duty firearm, rarely carry concealed. Not for 1st choice for home protection, the 870 or 1187 would be used first.

On the age factor, i buy pistol ammo im 20 now but have been buying it since 18. I say im using it for a kel tec sub 2000 which also takes glock 22 40. mags. Next on the list is a Ruger LCP for concealed carry.

I carry a Glock 23 with me everyday. I bought my wife a S&W 38 for her to have at the house when I had to work night shift and when I was working out of state. I have a Ruger Single Six that I just use for plinking. I also have a Kel Tec 380 and a XD 45.

For home protection my Winchester 1300 is what I will reach for everybody knows what that sound is when you rack one in.

After school while waiting for buses we would often talk about guns with the other gun guru's(not that I am one, I just kinda wanted to learn). Mostly hunting rifles and handguns.

I didn't think that was wierd?

I've only held a friend's dad's G17 once. It was pretty darn comfortable to me and the weight felt good. But im no owner nor am I very educated in the gun world, so I dont really know what to look for.

And hell, they do look pretty darn snazzy  :)

However, i've never shot a glock.

You might change your mind after you shoot one (talking about any gun)...

I almost bought a Springfield XD without shooting one, and I am glad I popped a few rounds off before I dropped the coin one one.  I thought it felt unbalanced, and not to comfortable...

A gun will feel totally different with a loaded mag...  The added weight will give you the true feeling of a gun, I think anyway...

Question, When purchasing a firearm, do they normally let you put some lead down the range first?

If it's a new gun, no. Some ranges rent guns, some don't. All around here that rent require that you show you are familiar with and know how to handle one before they will rent it though.

I've owned three Glocks, all .45 ACPs. I've owned a Glock 21SF, 30SF and a 36. The 36 had some feed issues. The 21SF worked well, but the slide rubbed the triggerbar and gouged it. The 30SF was very troublesome. The trigger bar ended up with a pretty significant gouge and the slide would not go into battery after each round fired. It would go forward except for the last 1/4 inch or so. Then I had to push it forward by hand. This problem actually got worse as I fired more rounds. Got to the point I could not trust these guns to use for self defense. And sold all three.

Glock makes a good gun, but not in .45ACP. The problem I encountered were apparently widespread. And Glock would neither acknowledge them or fix the guns without a fight.

If you want a Glock, avoid the .45ACP versions. If you want a poly-framed .45ACP, I'd recommend a S&W M&P or a Springfield.

When I take a new guy out, I will take him to the one range here that rents them. it costs more but saves you TONS. Every model will fire/feel different. You really need to match the gun to the shooter to get an optimal fit. While yeah you want one that looks good dont get too hung up on aesthetics they are not everything.
