Straight up Swimbaits

Here is the deal...

-I want to get into some swimbait fishing and have for a long time

-I have a low budget:  I'm 16, don't have a job, and can barely afford to get my lures at Sports Authority or Dick's anyway...

I'm not into these banjo minnows and SK softbaits and stuff:  I don't wanna mess around with rigging and I just don't trust these miracle plastics anyhow....

-I am not in California:  I am not fishing for the world record in the trout stocked waters of that promised land way out west.. I am in the suburbs of the metro-Atlanta area and I just want to get above 5 or maybe even up to 10 pounds... so I don't think I will be needing a foot long trout on my line.

-I don't have a mast for a rod:  based on my low budget I'm stuck with what I got; a buncha medium action rods, spinning and baitcaster, from 6 to 7 ft.

If any of you want to look past all of this anti-swimbait clutter and give me some advice I would SURE appreciate it!!!!

You do know a WW LB was caught out of Georgia right?  So don't set your sites to low  . Personally I plan on going with a hudelston trout swim bait at local lake that has some trout in it and possibly a blugill swim bait from matt lures for another lake. I plan to go after some monsters this fall after I save up the cash for the lures ;D. So check out matt lures for some swim baits.

Noone knows "Low Budget" better than me but a medium rod just won't throw these baits.

What lakes do you fish? What types of forage do the lakes have. I know what works as far as swimbaits on most of Atlanta's lakes. Fishing here is different than fishing in California but I do catch fish on big eight and ten inch swimbaits.  They are not always the best baits though and I catch plenty of big fish including a fifteen pound twelve ounce fish on baits six inches or less.  I am as low budget as they come but it's the  biggest waste of money to buy something cheap that don't work. You might need a swimbait rod and you might not. You might just need to fish a different lake or a different location in the lake and use a worm or jig to catch a five to ten pounder. But a swimbait is a good tool and often the best tool when used in the right place and time to catch big fish.

I know you are working on you own project and I hope it turns out

well, but drawing a pattern, cutting your design and painting the

wood doesn't mean you have a "producing lure". You have to start

somewhere, but for most of us it's going to be at the tackle shop or

on the internet, not the lathe.

its really not that difficult.

and the advantages are that you can make it exactly how you want, and its VERY low budget! you might pay 10 bucks in supplies that will be able to make 2 or 3 baits, instead of paying 20+ for one bait.

plus, they are so fun to make  ;D

I've done well with the River to Sea V joint minnows which are reasonably priced and catch a lot of fish, done real well on the wake series Chartreuse Shad color, I've also caught some nice ones on the Strike King Shads in the Blue Gill color.I've caught a few over 5 plus on these which are nice size bass in SW Michigan. One last one that I like for conventional eqipment would be the Matt Lures Baby Bass series. Good Luck

I know you wont litsen untill it happens to you but if you do go out swimbaiting with the wrong gear it WILL I REPEAT IT WILL COST YOU FISH> normal fish is no big deal but your not targeting normal fish. Your targeting big fish and there is a good chance for a lot of you it could be your new personl best you lose becase you are using the wrong/cheap gear.

Also making your own swimbaits is extremly fun and I recomend it for anybody who has skills. However keep in mind while its easy to make a bait, its extremly difficult to make one that is a consistant big fish producer. There are hundreds of swimbaits on the market now and half just plain suck and the other half catch regular fish. There is just a tiny percentage that are proven big bass catcher. The differences my apera subtle to the fisherman but the results are about as different as black and white. some baits have "it" and most dont.

dsaaverda I wish you luck. I hope your new bait produces your PB bass. However dont give up or get frustrated if you never get a bite on it. It happens. I gaurantee if you went in to any REAL swimbait makers shop you would find baits that just didnt cut it. Thats the difference. So many companies just put stuff out to get it out there and make money. Only a few realy test the baits hard and they KNOW they catch fish before they ever sell one.
