yeah it's just fun to discuss Nate, as long as it doesn't erupt into a belligerent argument, I'd say it's a decent thread. i have accepted the fact that there is no way to prove or disprove life on other planets. and yes it doesn't have to be an intelligent life,could be the single cell organism dividing himself across a puddle of goo. however, truth is supported by evidence. most adult people don't believe in bigfoot, why? many manifestations of the bigfoot can be traced back to somebody trying to trick someone.Well, many manifestations of the aliens can be traced back to somebody trying to trick someone. bigfoot is never available for an interview. aliens are never available for an interview. ;D

Here is something to consider as well. Even at our tech stage we are just getting into materials and tech that allow us to appear invisible-ish and stealth tech that cuts the radar cross section of a large aircraft to the size of a tennis ball.

IF there were aliens going planet to planet, then they have solved bending space, warp theory (yes theoretically it is real),  or some other means of traveling faster than the speed of light, anti-gravity, atmosphere recycling, etc.  At the least, I would think they could easily hide their craft from the visible light spectrum as well as any detection devices we could come up with.

So yeah there very well could be other life out there. Intelligent even. And WHY would they want to talk to us? Study from an anthropology type interest but what would we offer as far as allies/friends?

Space, so far as we know, is infinite, so chances are, that there are tons of earth like planets out there. Even 1 in 100,000,000 chance of earth in an infinite universe, happens plenty of times.

The best guess of our scientists is that there are around 10²⁴ stars in our universe.  That's a LOT of stars.  And a LOT of those stars will have planets.  And LOT of those planets will have the conditions to support life.  And a LOT of those planets capable of supporting life will develop intelligent life.  How many intelligent life forms are out there?  No one will ever know until Einstein's famous equation can be dis-proven, whether it be by the human race or other beings who may choose to visit our insignificant little world, nestled among billions and billions of others having a similar life supporting climate.

And intelligent life doesn't need to be human or even carbon based. Life could evolve under very different circumstances than happened here.

This proves that there was/is life somewhere other than Earth.

We don't even know everything about our galaxy, let alone the billions of others in the universe and we never will know.

People will always doubt that there are aliens until they visit our planet or we visit theirs.

I just want to point out, before my side of the argument is tainted, that they never confirmed those to be bacteria. If I remember correctly, at some point, NASA declared that it was NOT bacterial fossils. Just saying.

the universe is bigger than we can comprehend. kinda arrogant to think we are the only ones IMO.

why havent they visited? we're too far. the nearest star to the sun is over 4 light yrs away. physics has a speed limit just under the speed of light. is it even possible to build a vessel to travel any where near that speed?

the nearest planet hosting life might be 50,000 light yrs away. even if the life is advanced enough to leave their solar system, why would they head this way?

intelligent life could have existed, flourished for millions of years and become extinct on a far away planet before we were even began transmitting any signals.

bigfruits, they have conceptually "proven" that you can do Star Trek style warp travel (faster than light travel). If you warp space around a vessel (warp field), you can in effect  travel faster than light. The ship itself never moves faster than light.

of course the problem right now is

1. We have no idea how to warp space in that manner.

2. Even if we could figure out how to do it, it is probably going to take WAY more energy than we can generate right now.

Give us 500 or 1,000 years though we could potentially come up with solutions and travel between stars. If we can think of the theory, an older species can too, and if they do and have enough time, they may be able to travel using it.

Also, if they can come up with a manner to create artificial gravity , get a renewable, and portable energy source and get REAL good at recycling their environment (air, water, food) then they would not need warp travel. They could just load up a large ship and spend hundreds or thousands of years to travel between stars. Given our medical tech right now, a species capable of creating this type of ship could be able to manipulate their genes and regenerate bodies to the point that they do not age anymore.

So, IMO, there are plenty of ways that a civilization can do this. The reasons to visit us at this point in our evolution, I am not so comfortable with. Anthropology study is one. The other, resource harvesting (not so nice). Maybe enslavement/empire building/play god, etc. Given our own improvements in weapons and lack of improvement in civility, I would not expect an advanced race to necessarily evolve to be non-violent and friendly.
