SDoolittle Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 College football is only about two weeks away. Who do you think will walk away with the crystal football at the end of the season? The poll contains the USA Today Top Ten, but if you're predicting someone else, let us know. Quote

Super User 5bass Posted August 16, 2010 Super User Posted August 16, 2010 I'm hoping for an Oklahoma-Boise State rematch Well, it's going to be hard for Boise St. to get in the title game with one loss just because they're Boise St. The good news is they'll be losing their first game so losing early is better than losing late. VIRGINIA TECH ALL THE WAY!!! Super User Matt Fly Posted August 16, 2010 Super User Posted August 16, 2010 Take Texas and Okalahoma off the poll, no team in past decade, bcs era has won the title with a freshmen or sophmore starting at QB.   Also, no team from a non BCS conf has ever played for the title.    So scratch TCU and Boise off the list also.   I'll have it narrowed down when the AP polls come out on the 21st. VIRGINIA TECH ALL THE WAY!!! I hope your coach doesn't whine to the refs about the blocking this year when GT beats you. Again. Come on Chris, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. GT just happened to find one last year. But, since you want to bring up past events, VT is 4-2 against GT since 2000, so..... Obviously, if Frank Beamer was whining at all, ever, GT must have been doing something that the refs just flat out refused to call. Beamer is not one to whine just because his team may be losing. But since you're so confident with your 'Again' statement, lets make it interesting. Your pick of a Lucky Craft bait against my pick of a Lucky Craft bait? November 4th. You in? 'Again' is a big statement seeing as how GT has never beaten VT 2 times in a row. VT though, has beaten GT 2 in a row, two different times. Hmmm.... Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted August 16, 2010 Super User Posted August 16, 2010 Forget your poll! THE CANES ARE COMING BACK! Seriously though, they should win the ACC this year. Otherwise it's a failure. Depending on how they make it out of the gate this year, they could set themselves up very well for a title run if they stay healthy. All that being said, as much as I HATE to say it; I think Bama will make a strong run for the title again this year. Man I hate Nick Sabin. I've got a few other names for him that wouldn't float too well with the admins of the forums...... VIRGINIA TECH ALL THE WAY!!! Gobble...gobble. What a war cry. Speaking of crying, Miami thought they had something for VT last year....then reality slapped them in the face, like 31-7. I think the Blacksburg newspaper read something like 'Hurricanes reduced to weak tropical storms'. I thought that headline summed it up perfectly. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted August 17, 2010 Super User Posted August 17, 2010 VT comes down here this year. Screw playing in that rainy freezing cold stuff up there in Blacksburg like last year. They were pretty beat up going into that game. Should have still done better. Quote

Super User Sam Posted August 17, 2010 Super User Posted August 17, 2010 Early polls mean nothing other than a starting point. If a good team is ranked low it is very difficult for them to move up into the top two. Iowa should give Ohio State a good run for the money. Otherwise these are the two best teams in the Big 10, with Wisconsin having the chance to be the party crasher. Arkansas should have an outstanding offense and maybe defeat Bama at Razorback Stadium. Plus the fact that the SEC teams will be beating each other up this season so I do not expect any to be undefeated. However, like it or not, Alabama is the team to beat. The ACC has Virginia Tech and Florida State. Neither will make it. The Big 12 may have either Oklahoma or Nebraska ready to play in the big game but Nebraska has a target on their back and a chip on their shoulder so it will be fun to see who wins the Big 12 this year. OU has a good shot at the BCS title game since they play in a weak conference. The PAC 10 has Oregon since USC got caught cheating again. Otherwise, no others in the conference have a chance. OK, maybe Stanford. As we know, if Boise defeats VATech then they will stay in the top three or four for the remainder of the year. So Boise may make it if the coaches vote them into the top two. Their strength of schedule will hurt them. My favorites are, in no particular order, Alabama, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Florida, LSU, Arkansas and Oklahoma. The SEC West could be the toughest division in college football this year with the best team not making it to the BCS. It would be nice to have an Iowa or Wisconsin make it this year just to have another team other than the same ones we have had for the past six years. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted August 17, 2010 Super User Posted August 17, 2010   Not true SAM.  Every eventual BCS champ was ranked in the AP poll to start the season.   The lowest ranked team to ever win the BCS title was OU in the 2000 season and they started the AP poll at #20 that year.  No team has ever won the BCS title that was NOT in the top 20 to start the season.            Quote

First thing's first. Stomp the crap out of Boise. Please. Secondly, I'm all in. Bring it, turkey!  ;D GT was blocking. Legally. The average college FB fan doesn't know the difference between a cut block and a chop block (and I really didn't either until my alma mater installed a triple option offense), but bottom line is that the cut block is legal. As far as two game winning streaks, I welcome you to look at the wonderful "helmet to helmet" call you guys got in 2008, deep in VT territory on a 3rd and long in a tie game with under a minute left. If this call doesn't get made, does GT win? Who knows? Was is a terrible call in a pivotal situation? Yep Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I love to see how narrow minded the human race is. This ALWAYS happens when talking about sports. Your state or city team is THE team and cant be beat. HAHA!!! I say LSU!!! I heard Micheal Ford, the RS Freshman RB, is a BEAST! Also, Jordan Jefferson has another year under his belt and his recievers are top notch with Ruben Randle, Terrance Tolliver, and Russel Shepperd. Defesively we need some people to step up and fill some holes. Do we even have any LB? The DL will be stout, but Im scared to see whats going to be behind em. Also, our Offensive Coordinater SUCKS!!!! Hmmm....go figure, I guess I am human after all. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 17, 2010 Super User Posted August 17, 2010 Matt, you and I agree. You are correct about the preseason rankings of the top 20. But it is more difficult for a team in the bottom third of the preseason poll to move up unless they have a dynamite season. However, with the balance in the SEC; the four big dogs in the Big 10 (TOSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, PSU); a very balanced ACC with Tech and FSU favored although Miami is supposed to do well; a weak Big 12 with Nebraska coming out swinging and Texas and OU favored again; and the PAC 10 having Washington and Oregon as the favorites, I just cannot see any team ranked in the lower third moving up to the top two spots. So for LSU to make it they will have to defeat everyone on a very strong schedule and then win the SEC championship game. For TOSU to win it they can lose one game and still get the nod to play the BCS championship game. But funny things happen in college football. Just ask West Virginia fans. Quote
