Cost of shipping rods

Want to sell upwards of a dozen rods.  I don't want to overcharge for shipping, but  I do not want to lose money either.  I would like to factor it into a tyd price, and adjust the price for multi purchases. 

How many casting and/or spinning rods fit into a certain size tube?  PVC or cardboard, depending on qty. 

I'm not looking for exact numbers, but a close ballpark figure would really help me out.

I once got a shipment of 3 rods inside one cardboard tube that had a diameter of about 4 inches. Nothing was damaged.

The shipping label on the tube had a price on it. I think it was around 24 dollars.

I figure as long as you bubble wrap the rods together snugly and pack the tube with extra bubble wrap or soft packing material so that nothing moves when you shake the package, there shouldn't be any issues with stuff breaking.

My sugesstion is put them together with a rubber band and measure approximately how big a piece of pvc pipe and how long it would take for them to fit in. then use pvc Glue and glue the cap on on end the put a glue on cap on other end that has a screw in plug . put rods n but first and the find some type of foam to shove it down in so far that the tips wont be rattling around. then screw in cap. then take a drill and drill about 5/16 hole through the side through the threads and the another through the screw in cap. so you can thread a wire tie so the cap wont come unscrewed. I would put two sets of holes on there just for safety sake. my opinion for all this work have them ship the tube case back to you in case u need it again or would make excellent storage so they wouldnt get boke. My suggestion would be to contact the shipper you will using to see if a rate chart is available.  Most shipments are based on weight and delivery time requested.  However, I'm pretty sure that shipping rods in whatever kind of tube has size issues as well.

I put 8 into a rod tube that came from acadia rods. Shipped them to michigan from new mexico 2 day shipping for 22$.

I recently shipped 2 rods in a 2" diameter piece of Sched 40, PVC well casing.  It was a snug fit with the rods wrapped with newspaper.  A 4 inch tube would probably handle 4-5 rods. 

Avoid cardboard tubes.  I quit using them after having a few breakages in shipment.

Avoid thin walled PVC.  Those can and will fracture if struck hard enough.

Try and use schedule 40.  It's heavier and will add to the shipping cost but I've never had one break.  I secure the ends with multiple wraps of duck tape or clear packing tape.  There is no need to make any sort of glued on screw end caps or anything like that.  That is mere overkill and could result in the buyer breaking the rods if he can't figure out how to get the end caps off.

Mark the tube "tip end", "butt end" so the buyer knows.  Obviously, if the rods are not aligned that way in the tube that's not feasible.

GET INSURANCE.

Packages over 6' in length have extra surcharges since none of the carriers can process them through normal means at the distribution centers (via conveyor belts).  There's usually a formula that takes length, weight and girth of the rod tube into account along with where it's going to.
