GTrombly Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 RT @mortreport: Reported on NFL Live - James Harrison fined $75,000 as repeat offender, Dunta Robinson $50,000, $50,000 for B. Meriwether. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted October 19, 2010 Super User Posted October 19, 2010 I played football as a kid...a lot. We were taught to try and level the person we were tackling. Hit him as hard as humanly possibly and drive him into the ground. We were told the best way to hit somebody was to stick a shoulder pad right into the guy and just keep running. Once you make contact, wrap up and hammer him to the ground. We were specifically told not to lead with the helmet. Even in Pop Warner ball there was a penalty for spearing. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 James Harrison Salary: $13,357,280...don't think he'll be missin 75 k to much. :-[ Quote
christopherjake Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 As much as I hate to see someone get injured, I also enjoy watching guys take a lickin. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted October 19, 2010 Super User Posted October 19, 2010 I also enjoy watching guys take a lickin. Me too, especially that Rivers guy in San Diego. Quote

Super User BASSclary Posted October 20, 2010 Super User Posted October 20, 2010 I've played football 3rd grade to 8th grade in Parks and Rec. We were told to try and level the opponent. Go in with your shoulder pads and put your leading shoulder into their chest, with your head to either side (depending on which shoulder you lead with) , wrap them up and bring them to the ground. If your feet left the ground in a flying/spear type tackle, there was a 15 yd penalty. IMO, Malicious hits after the whistle deserve penalties and fines. During the play, let the boys be boys. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I played Defensive Tackle in Grammer School and Middle Linebacker in High School. I never led with the head but did try to knock the bejesus out of the ball carrier. By my experience some of the ball carriers knew how to absorb the hit. At times I would just level them and they would spring back up. Very frustrating, I beleive it is also about how to take a hit as giving one. I would also get rattled. It is going to happen no matter what, just part of the game. Play by the rules and what happens will happen. Quote
1inStripes Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Played from 5th grade thru a season of college ball. This is my 10th season as an official, and Merriweather's hit was the only one I have a problem with that I have seen. You are taking a risk if you agree to sign a contract and play at that level. That doesn't mean everything goes, but theres was nothing wrong with the other hits I saw. Quote
Dam Yankee Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Next season they will line up with flags attached to their hips. It is getting ridiculous. One of the goals of a defensive player is to seperate the player from the football. At that speed anything can happen even if you are trying not to hurt the other guy. I concur with whoever said the Meriweather hit was the only one that looked dirty. Quote
bmadd Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VHCdAGccOg&feature=related Big hit. No launching your head into your opponent who isn't looking's head. And Addai probably cries at night before he ever plays the 49er's ;D Quote
GTrombly Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 yeah hes on my fantasy team, but they would have fined him for driving the opponent into the ground. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted October 20, 2010 Super User Posted October 20, 2010 The problem I have with some of these hits is they are not even close to the tackles being described earlier in the post. Everyone was taught to put their shoulder into the players chest, wrap them up and take them to the ground hard. The problem with the hits being fined is there is not attempt to wrap up and make a form tackle. Look at Harrison's hit on the wide receiver for example. No attempt to wrap up, used his forearms to make the hit harder on the guys head. Quote

Nice jab there, bossman. : I still don't agree with it. He's a reporter with an opinion that, of course, matches yours. I hope someone takes Joe Paterno's suggestion of removing facemasks from the game. I'm all for that one... Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted October 22, 2010 BassResource.com Administrator Posted October 22, 2010 No jab intended. Seriously. Quote
