Picking Up and Moving

Have any of you found somewhere where you believe you want to live, and just decided to up and move? Just having a little cash in your pocket, and no job for you when you get to your destination.

I am contemplating making a move to the southeast specifically in the Florence/Muscle Shoals/Decatur Alabama area. I was there for a week, and sort of fell in love with the area and the fishing...

Life doesn't get any easier the older you get... I thought it would, but you really need to make life altering decisions at times. I have a degree, and would like to start building on a career in the fisheries field. Without going for a masters experience is THE key. I may be debilitating myself by making a move to work somewhere that will not benefit me in terms of perusing a career.

If you have done anything like this how was/is your experience? Any general comments/advice would be great.

I have thought about it. There are a few areas of the country I am in love with.

We just recently made the decision to move to be closer to one set of my kid's grandparents. But I was able to make a work arrangement where I can keep working for the same company in a remote office. (the area we are moving to is not one I would have picked out)

I could be mistaken, but from what I remember about that area when we visited, was besides the tourism industry it was a fairly economically depressed area - something to think about. Then again, a working man can usually find work.

People who have an entrepreneurial spirit usually aren't satisfied until they have explored that possibility.

Well,I picked up and left everything behind from Texas to move to MI. to be with my wife who was my G/F at the time.

I had no job,a somewhat place to stay and was running on instinct that this girl was the one i was looking for.

All she had was a job at McDonald's,living with her grandparents and no car.

Now i have a pretty decent job,our own home and we are now married. She's in the medical field currently still going to school for EMT and she now works for gilbert's resident homes taking care of older people who are put into these homes.She's making somewhat decent money...but she wants to move up,reason why she's still in school.

My whole point is...if you want it to work out...you'll figure out how to make it work.

That is an awesome story, as well as very inspiring. I am glad things worked out for you. You definitely took a gamble, and I bet you don't regret it for a second. If I made a move from Texas to Michigan I am sure I would be minding the cold.

I picked up and moved to Alabama when I was 21. Had a possible job, but no guarantee. enrolled at the University of Alabama, got the job, got married, had a child, and stayed 13 years. Probably would be still there if not for the untimely death of my wife. Moved back to Texas a year after that.

Personally, i loved living over there. Beautiful area with tons of fishing opportunities.

Sorry to hear about your wife. I am sure that wasn''t/is easy. Where in Alabama did you live?

When I was there I got along with all the locals that I talked to. It may have been because they knew I was leaving, and was just there for the tournament. They treated me like I wasn't a "d**n yankee", and I would hope I got that same treatment once again.

Trussville just east of Birmingham off U.S. 11. Twenty minutes west of Lake Logan Martin. Spent many hours on it, Lay, Mitchell, and the rest up and down the river.

Went to work after I got married for the wife's father. He owned a large construction company. We built Oak Moutain State Park, and did the site work in downtown Birmingham for the Jefferson County Civic Center, but mainly concentrated on water treatment plants.

In my opinion Alabama has some of the best bass fishing opportunities. Granted humidity, and the heat can be tough. I can only name a handful of states who have the number of quality lakes AL does. I mean honestly... Pickwick, Wilson, Wheeler, Guntersville, Lay, Lewis-Smith, Neely-Henry and Logan Martin.

It's great to take up for your buddy but zero in on the job before you make a total commitment to move before you know what your possibilities truly are. Sorry to have ticked you off !

My wife and I picked up and moved about a year and half ago.  We lived in upstate NY and lost our jobs because the company thought people in India could do a better job!!!  We packed up and moved to the Chattanooga area with no jobs waiting.  We now have jobs and just moved into our first house.  Great area, great weather and best of all great fishing!!  It's tough, but persistance and willingness to succeed will get you far.

Sure I like other parts of the country but in the end no place is like Texas there is a sense of pride that comes with living here.

I'm not married, I run my own company, I'm young and got my whole life in front of me.

Yet I have never wanted to move away.

Just remember that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Unless you really hate where you are now making a move might not turn out to be all lunker bass and good times.

We're about the same age. If I were in your shoes, and had no commitment to a family, no kids and a desire to follow your decided career path; I wouldn't be looking for advice on a fishing forum, I would be packing up my items and calling U-Haul.

Like others had said do it while you can. As you settle, get older and become set in your ways it becomes harder. You are single with yourself only to answer to, follow the dream, if not you will regret it. Success will come, but once it has it is harder to pack up and follow a dream.

I would love to be a Bass Fishing Guide but my career has got in the way and it is hard to give up what I have today.

i find it so strange that alabama has so many tournament grade bass lakes and mississippi being right next door doesnt have one. still cant figure that one out
