Today I went to a pond with my buddy. I have never fished this pond, but I have seen big fish get caught out of it a few times (I work in this park). We finally got there at noon and right off the bat I tied on a frog. There is a bunch of slop in this pond and I figured this would be a good bait use. I was right. I had nine BIG fish blow up on my frog (out of the four fish I visually saw, all four were over 5 pounds). My only problem was, I couldn't hook up. I don't get to fish frogs too often because I hardly ever fish slop (scarce on the lakes I fish) so I'm not the best at hooking up (obviously). I plan on going back up there this week and trying it again, but this time I want to actually have a chance of hooking up with a fish. Can anyone think of any other lures I can use here or any other tips?

Don't know about the popper...It will just hook up all of the slop.

The hallow body frogs that you tipically retrieve slower seem to hook up more than the horny toad style soft plastic frogs.  You have to let the fish get the bait and then set the hook.  Personally I would just toss a worm or tube in that slop.  It doesnt look thick so you could punch a soft plastic in there with no problem.  I dont think you need that frog.

Try a large Brush Hog rigged weightless and skin-hooked.  Buzz it across the top and prepare to have your shoulder dislocated.  I watched AJ do this and it pulls some massive strikes.  If they miss it, pause the bait and let it fall through the slop, then hold on. ;)

I don't know how you are setting the hook but the last thing you want to do is as soon as the fish blows up on your bait set the hook.  You want to wait until you can actually feel the fish before you try to "cross his eyes".

Another way to catch them is by buying weedless hooks and rigging the frog straight on the hook and attaching the wire back to the hook therefore making the frog still weedless but it will help you with your hook-ups.

Good luck and have fun, don't get discouraged by the slop that is where they are!!!!

If you try hollow bodied frogs, I recommend a stout rod and 50lb braided line.  As with any topwater, wait until you feel the strike and then set the hook.  The more weedless the lure, the harder the hookset.

My favorite techniques for slop fishing are hollow bodied frogs, rage tail shad and frogs, and ten inch weightless worms.

Lunker City (maker of the Sluggo) makes a soft plastic lure called the Salad Spoon that comes across the top of that slop better than anything else I've fished.  Bass crush it.  It is called a spoon, but is not anything like what you think a spoon is... It is soft plastic, and a cross between a mouse bait and a giant grub.  Check out their website for what it looks like:

This might come under the heading of "any soft plastic" :-/. Have had good results using weightless Zoom Super Flukes (Watermelon Seed) ;)...
