My 15 year old son saved over $400 to buy a custome fixed gear bike. It came in today. I had to assemble it. I put the wheels on, handlebars, seat and pedals.

Right in the middle of the documentation was a big sheet of paper with big letters asying "Tighten the pedals into the cranks with a wrench. Failure to do so will result in stripped threads and will void the manufacturer's warranty fo that part."

Guess what. I tightened one, got into something else, and forgot to tighten the other. On my son's first ride, he came home with a stipped crank and a pedal that won't fit. Now I have to order a new crank and it will be another week or 10 days before he can ride it again.

That sucks. I know a guy that finished a 8 hour race in like 7 hours and 30 minutes around 70-80 miles on a single speed. Single speed is hard in the mountain, man. I'll stick to my $2,000 27-speed mountain bike.  ;D

Micro the competition for that picture is fierce. I put a new belt on the vacuum cleaner yesterday. I took the old one off and dropped it on the floor. I put the new one on, set the vac down and turned it on, running over the old belt and burning the new one in two. My wife then asked me why I did that? A few bucks, a 30 mile round trip to WalMart, and an hour and a half later the vac was ready to go. :-[

Ohio, those special bikes are extremely light but very strong so they are worth ever penny.

However, I would take that $2,700 and head for BPS or Green Top and hit the Shimano reels and Loomis rods very hard.  ;D   ;D   ;D

Yup. It just like any other hobbies and goods. They all have low end stuff at economical price and high end goods at high prices. Worth every dime though. I'm happy with the performance this bike has given me for the price I paid.

By the way, I also choose my bikes based on if I can pedel backwards or not. I prefer the pedel brakes, actually. I can get a much better skid mark with them if my fattass weight is distributed properly. I do skid marks at 24, I'm pretty much awesome.
