Branuss04 Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Ok so i've searched the internet but couldn't find any defined answer. Here is the situation - I just bought a handgun in California. I'm going to Nevada on Labor Day in the desert to do some dirt bike riding and wanted to pop off a few rounds while i'm out there. Is it legal to shoot a handgun in a different state than what it is registered in? Obviously California is VERY strict with guns, but it appears Nevada is pretty chill about their gun laws. Anybody have the legal answer for me? Thanks Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 To answer your question, no. It is not illegal to shoot your gun in a different state from where you purchased it. BUT you had better check with the state you're visiting and make sure they allow firearms. Call the local police department and ask if you're allowed to shoot in that area. I wouldn't listen to anyone except the proper authorities. This may or may not be accurate. http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/nevada.pdf Quote
OHIO Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 It is legal to bring your gun to that state, but it may not be legal to shoot within the area you will be in. If it's within city limits it will most likely be illegal to discharge the firearm Quote

The problem with locals is they frequently know jack about gun laws at the state level. I ran into a SC cop (not state but a small town) who insisted they had no reciprocity agreement with NC (Been in place for years) and was bound and determined to arrest me. It was my polite insistence that he really needed to get in touch with his supervisor before he got his department in legal trouble that saved me from getting arrested. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 30, 2010 Super User Posted August 30, 2010 Unless you live in CA or a few other less-free states, registration is non-existent. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted August 31, 2010 Super User Posted August 31, 2010 Unless you live in CA or a few other less-free states, registration is non-existent. That is true. And I don't think Nevada recognizes California's CCF permit either. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted August 31, 2010 Super User Posted August 31, 2010 I like goin on trips to Virginny from Murderland(peoples republic of maryland) Over here we cant take a handgun anywhere unless sellin it or shootin it ...Virginia you dont even need to live there and you can CARRY OPEN i love it Quote

I'm gonna make a phone call soon and get an answer Good luck man. Yeah the laws can be a PITA from state to state. When I moved from NY to NC, I made it a point to call each state (state police) to get their specific laws for transporting my hunting shotguns and rifles. Needless to say it was so confusing I just gave up put them in cases and put them in the moving van and just pretended I did not call anyone. One state they need to be locked, one state they need to be completely hidden, one state they need to be out of the case out in the open, etc. Enough to make your head spin Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted August 31, 2010 Super User Posted August 31, 2010 Ask a cop the next time you happen to be in a store about it. Most i know are very knowledgable and might help you. That's what i did when I started carrying w/o a CHL. He even offered to do an onsite inspection of my vehicle right there in the parking lot. I told him where the weapon was and he went through my truck just as he would on a traffic stop. Explained what i was doing wrong as far as storing the weapon and the ammo and what I should say if and when I were to get stopped. Make sure you are allowed to carry in the vehicle w/o a CHL in your state before asking one though. Quote
Branuss04 Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 I figure my situation is a little better. I'm going from Cali (a very strict gun state) to nevada (A very relaxed gun state). It could be worse and I could be doing the opposite Quote

Most i know are very knowledgable While I don't doubt the highlighted portion, I can say without reservation that in excess of 90% of law enforcement is absolutely clueless WRT to guns and gun laws. My sister is in NY I am in NC she is a cop, I had to explain to her why my concealed carry permit in NC would not allow me to carry in NY. She has been in the force 20 years Quote

This may or may not be accurate. http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/nevada.pdf i just dont see how this can be true............... my father, a man who has been in law enforcement for 37 years, has crossed many a state line for NRA shoots, would spend many years in jail about now............. i know for a fact that: if youre a KS owner you can go to MO, IA, and NE and shoot everything short of a nuke as long as you follow local and state laws...... Try going from your home state to NY, MD, or CA with your a handgun. With my NC concealed carry permit I can go to 33+ states and they honor it but outside that 33, I can get in serious trouble taking it outside. LEOs are given a wider range of permission to carry. My sister for example is a cop in NY she can take her gun almost anywhere including here. I cannot however carry in NY legally. I am betting coming from CA to almost anywhere else in the country you will find looser restrictions. Best to know though Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted September 1, 2010 Super User Posted September 1, 2010 LEOs are given more relaxed rules for carrying. I recently had a LEO friend tell me that the policy will typically keep you out of jail but not out of court (for LEO carrying out of state). Quote

moby bass Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Here in PA we have a very handy guide which can be found online. Its by PAopencarry.org. I have printed a few copies and keep them in my glove compartment, should I need to refer to them. Quote
