Super User NorcalBassin Posted August 27, 2010 Super User Posted August 27, 2010 Not sure how many of you guys caught the "Countdown" show for this event, but did they seriously have to put subtitles up so James Toney could be understood? He was a heck of a boxer, but he's already 3/4 of his way to being the next Ali... and I don't mean that in a good way. The card is not quite as good as UFC 117 earlier this month, but it is still top notch. Big 3 fights are the Penn v Edgar rematch for the LW title, Couture v Toney as a potential freak show that I won't be able to take my eyes off of, and Florian v Maynard with the winner getting the next LW title shot. My takes: BJ chokes out Edgar in R3 after a very competitive first couple rounds. Couture by TKO late in the first. I'd almost like to see Toney get an early KO just so I could see him get destroyed by a younger top 10 HW as opposed to losing to a near 50 year old legend... just can't see Randy losing this one or it getting out of the first (unless Randy just wants to punish him after he gasses him in the clinch). Florian also by choke in R3... Florian is the best LW in the world outside of BJ. He's basically Skeet to BJ's KVD. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted August 27, 2010 Super User Posted August 27, 2010 I'm still in shock from the first BJ / Frankie fight. I think BJ really underestimated Frankie's 'game' and it cost him the belt. I dont see that happening again. BJ is the better fighter....and we'll see that proven Saturday night. I cant see Toney doing much with Randy once they lock together. Florian vs. Maynard may be the fight of the night. I wouldnt mind seeing Maynard win it but I've got a feeling Florian will end up winning. If Maynard can slam Florian a couple times, that may change my mind. If that doesnt happen, I see Florian controlling the ground game and 'out-pointing' Maynard on the cards. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted August 27, 2010 Super User Posted August 27, 2010 Toney was...once a great boxer..R.C. is gonna school James. There will be No lights out for JT, except his own..Also looking for BJ to redeem himself. Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted August 29, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 29, 2010 Well, 1/3 isn't too bad. As mentioned above, Maynard and Couture won and BJ got lit up for 5 rounds. Florian was overwhelmed by Maynard's take downs and couldn't do anything off his back... absolutely dominated him. Couture took all of 15 seconds to take Toney down with a dive to a single ankle and it was all over from there. Randy actually went easy on him since he had him full mount from the ankle take down and then only GnP for a few combinations before transitioning into a choke. He could have just pounded on him for 4:30 if he wanted to. BJ looked almost as bad as he did against GSP... Edgar is like Tigger in there. Literally never stopped bouncing around and won 50-45. Rematch with Maynard for the title should be interesting (Maynard dominated Edgar a couple years ago for Edgar's only loss). Nice solid card overall with Maia's decision being a boring fight but Diaz and Davis being full of action, blood, and eventual unconsciousness. Hometown boy Lauzon also destroyed Ruediger and got him to tap with an armbar. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted August 29, 2010 Super User Posted August 29, 2010 Yeah, I cant believe my boy BJ didnt do better this time. It looked like he just wasnt into being there and he looked sluggish from the start. Frankie's constant movement has got to be irritating for his opponents, but for him it's very effective. I am in shock that BJ didnt do more to put himself in a better position to at least score some points. It was as if he was scared to take Frankie down. When has BJ ever been afraid to take anybody down? I bet Maynard will take him down.... People are dogging Maia but I like watching his fights. I like the tactical part of the ground game and the battles within. Anybody can stand up and swing, not everybody has the skills to compete effectively on the ground. I'd much rather see a submission than a knockout anytime. Quote
TrippyJai Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 A lot of people have been talking about BJ's performance and I really believe BJ had no answer for Frankie. Frankie came out of the gates so aggressive and was the one who took BJ down 3 times. He has never been that good with his cardio and Edgar pushed the pace even harder in this fight than the last. Remember it's a 5 round fight. Even when BJ had his back for a second, Edgar was able to reverse it on him into guard. Great foot work, fast hands and BJ just couldn't catch him at all. Quote
