microman Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 not unless it belongs to someone, and if a meteor lands in your property, sell it, they are valuable! Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted August 1, 2010 Super User Posted August 1, 2010 If it's a frozen blue chunk of ice, it came from an airplane's lavatory. I don't think they're worth much Quote
pa mountain man Posted August 1, 2010 Author Posted August 1, 2010 "Thats a space peanut" ;D Whatever it is, is metal, and looks like it was liquified at one point. It left a 1.5'x1.5' hole 7" deep in my back yard. I haven't touched it yet, until I can see if the college has a gigometer, I have enough tumors as it is. Quote
B-Dozer Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 You have us curious now, at least I am. Keep us up to date, pictures would be appreciated. Careful with the pets if you have any. Quote

done Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 If something were to land on my property, from a plane or space, can I keep it? Of course you can. Just about every nasty Sci-Fi show starts with someone asking that same question. However, the guy who finds it is usually the one they use to show everyone just how nasty a death it will cause for us mere mortals. Definitely throw up pics when ya get them. Even when you get it cleared for radiation, I would recommend you not touch it directly. There are a lot of nasty chemicals they use on spacecraft and I would not take the chance unless I knew it was safe. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 1, 2010 Super User Posted August 1, 2010 Can you keep something which lands on your property? Not necessarily. Depends on the circumstances, and the law. Quote
FordNFishinLover Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Lets get some pictures! I'm curouis about this thing. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted August 1, 2010 Super User Posted August 1, 2010 It may not be a bad idea to contact local authorities . Quote
farmpond1 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 After the space shuttle Columbia disaster, it was unlawful to withhold debris. So, at least in one example, no, you can't always keep it. Quote

pa mountain man Posted August 5, 2010 Author Posted August 5, 2010 Update: I contacted the closest astronomer club, and had them look at it. It is a meteorite(sp?), and was offered a nice chunk of change for it. I'll get some pics of it before I sell it, I don't have a digital camera, or cell phone, and I don't know if my comp can handle it, it's older than my truck, and it's an 01' ;D. I'll ask a neighbor if they have one. Quote
B-Dozer Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Thanks for the reply. What's a meteorite going for these days, like I know what a good price is. :} By the way to me 01 isn't all that old for a truck, for me anyway. Quote
