Super User Sam Posted August 1, 2010 Super User Posted August 1, 2010 I worked the Pure Fishing booth today at the100th Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia today and had a great time. We have a machine that will test the knot strength. Either the knot or line will break and the machine tells you how much pressure it took to break the knot or line. The Scouts and their parents were very nice and we discussed fishing while they tried their skills at knot tying. The Pure Fishing (Berkley) people were fantastic hosts and wonderful guys. They brought the bass tank with them for the demonstrations and the two pros were outstanding. I met Bradley Roy, the BASS Rookie of the Year and he was a nice as anyone would expect him to be. He is a wonderful ambassador for bass fishing. And my buddy Dave and I gave him a secret technique that he will use when fishing. Bagley was appreciative of the suggestion. Hank Parker will be at the Jamboree on Sunday and work with us plus put on a clinic for the scouts. Ike was there on Friday. I will be at the Jamboree on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday so if you are around please stop by. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 1, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 1, 2010 By the way, Bradley told me of his visit to the Berkley labs where Dr. Keith Jones conducts his experiments. What a trip! I wish I could visit the facilities one day. Dr. Jones has special tanks where he places live bass and then tests scents and various baits. Extremely interesting conversation with Bradley on what Dr. Jones does and the results. I would love for Glenn to take a tour of the Berkley labs and give us a report along with a video. Glenn????????? Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 1, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 1, 2010 Day two at the Jamboree was fantastic. Met boys from a lot of states and foreign countries along with their scout masters. Most of the boys knew the Clinch and Doubled Clinch knots but not the Palomar. I taught a lot of the boys how to tie a Palomar and they were surprised at the knot strength. On Monday we will be having Hank Parker. Should be another great day at the Jamboree on Monday. I caught a bass out of the pond this AM before the events started. No more fishing is allowed unless I can sweet talk them into letting me fish. Quote
etommy28 Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 I was there as a scout 5 years ago, i wish I could be there this year, it just did not happen. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted August 2, 2010 Super User Posted August 2, 2010 Pretty cool Sam. Through my years as a scout, and then as a leader, our troop unfortunately never made it to a Jamboree or Philmont. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted August 2, 2010 Super User Posted August 2, 2010 Man I wish I was there. Continue to have fun Sam and keep us posted. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 3, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2010 As usual, Hank Parker was fantastic at the Boy Scout Jamboree today. What a gentleman. He is so easy to talk to and his jokes will keep you in stitches, just like Jimmy Houston, who he sees weekly. We were swamped again today at the Pure Fishing line testing booth. We had guys from France and at least 30 states come by the booth. A young scout caught the biggest catfish and won first place in the contest and he will get an all expense paid trip to Arkansas to film one of Hank Parker's TV shows as he fishes with Hank. The Boy Scouts that came by today were as nice as they could be. They tied Clinch and Improved Clinch knots the most and we showed them the Palomar which many had problems mastering. Some scouts made up knots which was a trip all by itself to see if their crazy knots would hold. Tuesday is the last day for our booth as the boy scouts go home on Wednesday. Overall, the Boy Scouts of America and the Fort A.P. Hill military are great and they treat us with a high level of respect and kindness. My feet hurt but it is worth it. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted August 3, 2010 Super User Posted August 3, 2010 Pretty cool Sam. Through my years as a scout, and then as a leader, our troop unfortunately never made it to a Jamboree or Philmont. Same here, always wanted to go to both but never made it. Sounds like fun and glad to see the support for the BSA. Quote
endless Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Man I had no ideal they did all that there. I live right off chase street so I'm next door to AP Hill. Sounds like your having the time of your life. Hank and Ike wow! Always thought it was just a camping thing. I saw some scouts touring bowling green historic town.Walking near Mike's tackle shop. Is it true they bought land in West Virginia and this is the last time at AP Hill? What pond you fish, Beaverdamn? I caught 3.5 lber out of there. If go a round back of pond there's stumps, lilies and a beaverdamn. I frog Boyou most of last year with my boat and I hit up Whites lake not too long ago. I just hate that we can't fish it till boy's scouts is gone cause I'm dying to hit Smoots too. Some guy told he caught a 7 lber there but I'm not sure. Smoots is like 5 minutes behind my house. I think its Buzzard's that's a lilie haven so I'm dying to frog it. Travis lake is nice too but I was land bound then but I caught a 3 foot snapping turtle there. I do love how this year the ponds access is 24/7 now. Last year they were sunrise to sunset. You just still need permission for Laser range, Smoots, and White's lake. For those all you got to do is call ahead and make sure they're not training in those areas. Also for $20 to fish 13 ponds and lakes is great. Quote

I'm jealose of the kid right now, nah I'm very happy for him. Thanks Sam for the reports cause I never knew any of this and thankful to be informed. Living in Bowling green for over 8 yrs I had no ideal of what BSA did or do. I'm 28 and still have trouble with the polomar knot. Did any of them create agood knot? Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 3, 2010 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2010 endless, the scouts made up knots and it was funny watching their inventions and how they failed. A few did OK but most of them were disasters and we all got a kick out of it. We taught many guys how to tie a Palomar Knot and they really appreciated the help. They need a lot of practice to get it right. Almost everyone knows the Clinch or Improved Clinch knot. Some worked and some didn't. The also burned the line and we showed them how to wet the line to avoid that problem. Yes, BSA was given land in West Virginia and the national and international jamborees will be in West Virginia from now on. This was the last BSA at Fort A.P. Hill. I caught a 1.5 pound out of the small pond were we were fishing. I think it is Looking Glass pond or something like that six-miles on the main road from the main gate. The biggest bass taken out of the pond was 5 pounds. After reading your post I may try to fish some of the other ponds in the future. Thanks for the information. Quote
