bweave09 Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Anybody own one? I'm looking for something cheap and fun to shoot. It has come down to a Smith & Wesson MP 15-22 or a GSG-5 (not AR style). Any opinions? Quote
I.rar Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 ruger 10/22 with a tapco stock and goodies to go with it? Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 5, 2010 Super User Posted July 5, 2010 REMINGTON 597 VTR or SIG 522 Quote
bweave09 Posted July 5, 2010 Author Posted July 5, 2010 REMINGTON 597 VTR or SIG 522 The SIG 522 is on sale down the street for 329 dollars, I just didn't want to buy a scope and iron sights are a little under 300 bucks. I might still buy it though. Do you have one? Quote
Bigs Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 for the money either the sig 522 or the smith and wesson m&p 15-22. Both have had some issues here and there but for the money dont expect a work of art. I'll probably be gettin the smith myself very soon. Im buying a house with more then 5 acres so I'll be in my yard shooting at everything I see Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 5, 2010 Super User Posted July 5, 2010 Go with a lower from Bushmaster, Stag, DPMS or other AR manufacturer and purchase a dedicated .22LR upper. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted July 5, 2010 Super User Posted July 5, 2010 The GSG 5 for about $500 is a fun little piece. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 5, 2010 Super User Posted July 5, 2010 I've been shooting a Colt M4 .22 OPS Rifle but my neighbor has a the SIG 522, both are sweet Quote
Bigs Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I've been shooting a Colt M4 .22 OPS Rifle but my neighbor has a the SIG 522, both are sweet I handled the colt today and liked it. But I heard they jam up quite a bit. Infact Green Top which is one of the top fish/hunt shops in VA says they wont carry it anymore because so many ppl bought one there and came back with complaints. I take it yours has been trouble free ? Have you had to fix anything ? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 6, 2010 Super User Posted July 6, 2010 I personally like the lever actions. I have a couple of Winchester 9722. I can mix or match the shorts, longs, and long rifle loads. I also have a couple of SA but they are boring to shoot. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 6, 2010 Super User Posted July 6, 2010 While I do not know what problem are being experenced with jamming, some problems are from the ammo used. In my personal experence I find CCI's Mini-Mag HV ammo reduces jamming problems as does keeping the rifle clean. The only accessory added to this rifle is a Walther PS 55 Red Dot Sight. Wayne, I also love level actions Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 6, 2010 Super User Posted July 6, 2010 Ammo will be the cause of 99% of your problems with semi 22's. Bulk pack ammo, while nice and cheap, is sometimes just that. Cheap. You will get batches of under-powered 22 rounds in the bulk packs. That is the trade-off with the rounds costing a bit more money (Remington 525 pack vs CCI 50 pack). Swab the barrel every 100-200 rounds and clean it well at the end of the day. Most, if not all, of the guns mentioned in this thread will perform well for you. Personally, I like Burley's suggestion. Gives you more options for when you want to shoot with the big boys. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 6, 2010 Super User Posted July 6, 2010 A little off topic, but I just picked up a sweet older 22 lever action. Winchester 250 Deluxe Quote
twitchfish Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 H&K MP5 is a great way to ring thru boxes of .22 ammo also. Lots of add ons too. Little more expensive, $450 range, but no problems. Quote
RyneB Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 I own a S & W 15-22 and absolutely LOVE it. My brother in law has a GSG and after about 200 rounds, the thing will only shoot 1 round, and the 2nd round is a "fail to fire." he has taken the gun apart and it still refuses to fire 2 consecutive rounds. Its a shame though, because that was a neat looking and fun gun. Quote
matstone7 Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I recently got the S&W 15 22 and it's a blast. Have a few hundred rounds through it now without any problems. I have read that you can't run Remington ammo through it as it will jam. Apparently, the Remington case is a cat hair bigger. Found couple more upgrades would like to do with this weapon and life will feel complete, lol. Check these videos out and see what is possible with these fun guns. Heck with the bait monkey, the gun monkey knows when it;s time to keep the noise to a minimum. Combine the above with this... ..... Now we're talking! Quote
