Super User fishfordollars Posted June 3, 2010 Super User Posted June 3, 2010 Front page article in the Houston Chronicle this morning. The Zeta Drug Cartel hatched a plot to blow the dam last month. They went as far as to distribute fliers down lake below the dam on the Mexican side warning the Mexican people to leave the areas below the dam. Four million people live on each side of the river below the dam. Falcon Lake Dam is five miles long and they said it would have taken a tractor trailer load of explosives to do the job. Hundreds of law enforcement were dispatched to the dam area going as far as hiding in the bushes around the dam to stop any action. This just sucks. What kind of people would want to kill hundreds or thousands of innocent people just to make a point. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7033818.html Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted June 3, 2010 Super User Posted June 3, 2010 Just goes to show you what kind of idiots they are. What good is blowing up the dam gonna do? For them, it would illiminate a means of transportation of drugs across the border. If you ask me it would hurt their "business", wonder if they thought of that. It's sad that they could, and would, destroy one of the best fisheries in both countries because of drugs. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Its all about money, power, and control. Mexico needs to get a handle on them before it gets worse. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted June 3, 2010 Super User Posted June 3, 2010 The current Mexican president is the only one that has had the balls to do it. Because of his crackdown on drugs, thousands have lost their lives. It's a battle that sooner or later had to be fought. For this reason I've curtailed any travels to Mexico. It simply is not safe to go there right now. Kudos to him for doing what he is doing. Quote

From my understanding, there's almost no way to stop them right now. They have more firepower than most federal authorities have. Like redlinerobert said,it is not safe to go to Mexico right now...it won't be till the zeta cartel is wiped out completely.Severe action needs to be taken and unfortunately it's going to mean many, many more deaths. It's gonna take years to dismantle this cartel. :-/ Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted June 3, 2010 Author Super User Posted June 3, 2010 Word is even the game wardens were armed with AR-15 rifles over the holiday weekend. That's a big break from the normal weapons they usually carry. I'm betting there is a lot more going on down there than we will ever know. Texas Association of Bass Clubs State Championship tournament is schelduled for the last weekend of September down there. I got a call this morning and we are having a meeting June 15th to discuss possibly changing the site. I hope we don't, but if there is any chance that one of our qualifying anglers could get harmed it just would not be worth it. Quote
tyrius. Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 it won't be till the zeta cartel is wiped out completely. Wipe one out and another will rise to take its place. The problem won't be solved by brute force. The only way to fix the problem is to eliminate their source of income. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted June 3, 2010 Super User Posted June 3, 2010 I agree....no way in hell I'd go to Mexico these days and unfortunately, those thugs probably could've pulled off blowing up the dam had it not got out before it happened. Quote

Sidearm and a shotgun down here. At least is was until last weekend. A few carry a little more but it was not the norm. Quote
